Sometimes exercise equipment is confusing. Many people are unsure of what piece is best for them. Today we look at the exercise bike vs treadmill. For most users, I’d recommend the treadmill. It’s been the most useful cardio equipment over my years of competing. The bike is better for those with joint problems, or training specifically to target the legs or for biking events. Outside of that, I’d almost always recommend the treadmill. Also for more details on exercise bikes, take a look at our comparison of exercise and spin bikes.

Treadmills

Treadmills have been around for centuries and are still a firm favorite in gyms. They give consistent results and work for almost everybody. Because of this, almost every gym-goer has used one at some time.

Treadmill Benefits

Improvements for All Levels

A lot of people believe running on a treadmill is easier than running outdoors. While this can be true, it doesn’t have to be. Setting the incline to 1% is enough to make a treadmill running equally difficult to outdoor running.

Also, having an easier run at 0% incline is a good option for some people. Those who are not yet fit enough to handle outdoor runs can have an easier time starting off on a treadmill. Likewise, advanced runners can up the difficulty by increasing the incline. There are all kinds of possibilities. Using a treadmill basically has benefits for everybody.

Specific Improvements

Working on a treadmill will give you the exact workout you’re looking for. There’s no drop/increase in speed in which you could get on a bike because the belt forces you to move with it.

This type of consistency in regards to speed/incline is great for being precise with workouts. You can track results more accurately and you know that you’re pushing hard enough to get the improvements you want.

Another small benefit that comes from this is always knowing your exact speed/incline. Bikes can vary a bit as the speed goes up/down and you try to keep it steady. With a treadmill, it’s already steady, you just need to keep up!

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”466″ identifier=”B0193V3DJ6″ locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41Kif2i%2B41L.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Builds Joint Strength & Impact Resistance

Your joints will thank you for using a good treadmill, such as the [easyazon_link identifier=”B006JKUV54″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]True Performance 300[/easyazon_link] because this type of equipment comes with cushioning systems built into the deck. That means the impact on your joints is reduced when you land, so less wear and tear accumulates over time.

Versatility

A good, versatile treadmill allows you to do all kinds of workouts. Take the Cybex 750T for example. It has a huge speed range, a good amount of incline available, and can even do a negative incline. This means you can work on all kinds of slopes, and the speed adjustment lets you change between walking, jogging, or running. Anything from hill sprints to multi-hour hikes is possible on these machines.

Entertaining

Modern treadmills almost all come with at least an aux socket, so you can plug some headphones in and listen to music. Some also come with the ability to stream music or listen to the radio. High-end models like the NordicTrack C990 even have a tablet holder or TV screen with the ability to watch live, stream, or watch vids from external storage. All of this combines to give you a great amount to do whilst running.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B072R2T7K5″ locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51DTY3SVt3L.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Helpful Features

Some treadmills have certain features to make them more user-friendly. These include cup holders, towel holders, safety clips, and heart monitors. There are even some models that come with a fan fitted to help keep you cool!

Treadmill Drawbacks

Poor for Joint Agility & Stability

A treadmill has a very flat surface, which isn’t really compared to the outdoors. Outside there are all kinds of variations in the ground, some parts are sloped or uneven, different levels of hardness, plus you need to take turns to keep going outdoors – you can’t go in a straight line forever!

This uneven ground, turning and changes in the surface all help to build agility and mobility within the joints. It also strengthens the small supporting muscles around your feet and joints, which give you extra stability and performance once they are properly developed.

Using a treadmill limits all of these because its a straight line, perfectly flat design.

Bad for Injured/Unstable Joints

While your joints are saved from a lot of the impact when using a treadmill, there is still more impact than on a bike. This is because you are still running and your body weight is still slamming down onto your leg & foot with every step. For anybody working on rehab with a weak or injured joint, this is bad. It also limits how often the treadmill can be used by people with pre-existing joint issues.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”492″ identifier=”B00YG0JV96″ locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41acYnXxNIL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Doesn’t Work for All Muscle Groups

Running involves many muscle groups, including the core and upper body. Running on a treadmill lightens the load on some body parts. The main one is the hamstrings. Because the belt is moving by itself, you use a bit less energy to push off it compared to when you propel yourself off the ground outdoors. This reduces the load on your hamstrings in particular.

It’s also easier to slack off with your core & upper body, creating bad form and relying on the treadmill itself for support sometimes. All of this is bad for your general development and should be avoided.

Safety

While safety can be a plus, with emergency shut-off features and control over settings, it can still be a problem sometimes. This is during high-intensity workouts when you are struggling to keep up and really pushing. Once you cross the threshold and can no longer match the pace, it could cause an injury or other problem. Emergency shut-offs only usually work as you are coming off the treadmill anyway. Even turning the speed down is a gradual process, so it’s always possible that you’ll end up having to jump off yourself in an emergency.

Exercise Bike

Stationary bikes are also very popular, much like treadmills. They offer a lot of comfort and variation when exercising. Being able to adjust the resistance is how you increase/decrease workload, and some bikes, like the [easyazon_link identifier=”B0798DH9D9″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Pro Indoor Cycle Trainer[/easyazon_link], have enough settings to give a varied workout all around. Keep in mind we’re looking at stationary bikes here, though we have already done a previous comparison of outdoor cycling vs treadmill use

Exercise Bike Benefits

Very Safe to Use

Stationary bikes are one of the safest pieces of exercise equipment. As long as your position is set properly, there is very little risk. You are in full control of the pedals so if you stop, they stop, unlike a treadmill that keeps ongoing.

Low Cost

The cost of a decent stationary bike is lower than most pieces of equipment. Consider the [easyazon_link identifier=”B079FLSG81″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Bellar Sports Spin Bike[/easyazon_link], it’s cheaper than all but the most basic of treadmills and still has a good amount of features.

Easy to Store & Use

Bikes are usually a lot smaller and lighter than treadmills too. This means it doesn’t take up as much ground space and is also a lot easier to move around or store. Home users will find this most appealing. Having one available in your own home is a great help when trying to improve fitness.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B014VX254A” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41DKr6l6KHL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Variety of Workouts

A high-level bike, like the BIKE, will have enough different settings and features to give you a very varied workout. The way a bike does this is by adjusting the resistance, and sometimes also by asking you to keep the bike in a set RPM range. RPM is Revolutions Per Minute, basically, it refers to how fast you are pedaling. Raising and lowering resistance can mimic hills and other tough sections, as well as just making a regular workout tougher. The RPM is raised or lowered sometimes instead of changing the resistance.

No Impact

While a treadmill can be gentler on joints thanks to cushioning, a bike puts almost no strain at all on your joints. For people with previous injuries, this is excellent news. There is no impact whatsoever and the circular motion of pedaling is natural and gentle on the legs. The only area which still gets some wear is the knees, but the lack of impact helps them a lot.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B002KV1MJU” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41qvpFYuMdL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Drawbacks of Exercise Bikes

Fewer Calories Burned

When you use [easyazon_link identifier=”B002JB40MC” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]a stationary bike[/easyazon_link], there is less energy being burned by your body. This is because you are sat down and your legs are doing almost all of the work. The upper body is just there to help you hold your position. Compare that to running where your upper body & core are constantly stabilizing and moving with you to generate momentum. Obviously, the treadmill gives a bigger workload, which means it burns more calories too.

Limited Amount of Realism

Unlike the treadmill, a stationary bike can’t really be adjusted to match the outdoor experience. The incline doesn’t change at all so you’re always pedaling on the flat, and there is no unevenness anywhere. Granted, the treadmill stays quite flat too, but changing incline/decline really helps with that. A bike doesn’t have those features, so it can’t try to emulate real-world cycling, despite some great programs being available.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B07C6R4NGC” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/510CPvoCc1L.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]

Possible to Get Lazy

With a bike, you can ease up on how fast you pedal when tired, which means you might not be working as hard as you wanted to. Then there’s also resistance. Some bikes have numbered resistances, which is great for tracking where you’re at. Others use a dial/knob turning system, which has no marks or measurements, so it can be difficult to know if your resistance is the same as before or higher/lower.

Exercise Bike vs Treadmill

For most users, I would recommend the treadmill. This is because it gives more overall development. It works your core and even the upper body, plus your joints are going to be strengthened as well. There’s a lot of potential for advanced training too. You get this potential because of variable settings & workouts, plus the possibility to go at high speed/inclines.

A bike is recommended for people who are specifically training to ride, or looking for more focused leg development. Some bikes still have plenty of top-end potentials as well, so it’s still useful at high levels. You might also be trying to protect your joints by doing very low-impact work. The bike would be better in that case too.

We all know that riding bike is an excellent form of exercise. Yeah, we did it because it was something fun to do with our friends as kids. But in the process, it kept us from becoming the ‘husky’ kid in class. However, while we can’t be the husky kid in class, we can still be the office ‘big’ guy. Today we are solving the dilemma between spin bike vs exercise bike.

That is unless we find a way to keep the pounds off as adults—you know, like by riding an [easyazon_link identifier=”B007595TKU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]exercise bike[/easyazon_link]. But the question we all need to answer is what kind of exercise bike do we want, between spin bike vs exercise bike? Do we want a spin bike, a traditional upright stationary bike, or a recumbent bike?

While there are good things about every type of exercise bike, for me, the answer is easy. I wouldn’t even consider using a traditional [easyazon_link identifier=”B01KAGX7DU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]upright stationary bike[/easyazon_link] or a [easyazon_link identifier=”B002CVU2HG” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]spin bike[/easyazon_link]. For a larger than average size person like myself, they are just way too uncomfortable.

If I’m buying a bike, there is no question of whether I’m getting a spin bike or an exercise bike. I’m getting a [easyazon_link identifier=”B01KAGX74E” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]recumbent[/easyazon_link] (exercise) bike. I’m kind of partial to the Star Trac models.

They are much more comfortable to use, and you can burn some calories while using it. You may not burn them as fast as you would on another bike. But at least you will not dread working out because of how uncomfortable the tiny seat on a spin or [easyazon_link identifier=”B002KV383S” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]upright bike[/easyazon_link] is.

But that’s just my opinion. For those who need a reason other than comfort, let’s dive a little deeper into our options.

Spin Bike vs Exercise Bike

View on Amazon

Spin Bike vs Exercise Bike

There are essentially three different bikes to consider, a [easyazon_link identifier=”B0744HQ9XD” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]spin bike[/easyazon_link], a traditional [easyazon_link identifier=”B00KVZM2SC” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]upright bike[/easyazon_link], and a [easyazon_link identifier=”B005OU4E1M” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]recumbent bike[/easyazon_link]. For exercise purposes, they can all get the job done. But as anyone who has ever started and quite an exercise routine knows, like what you are doing or at least not hating what you are doing can be the difference-maker.

If you hate what you are doing, it is going to be super easy to quit. But if you like your exercise of choice, then your chances of success are that much higher.

Liking it would make it easier, but simply not hating it can be enough to keep you going. So, when it comes to cycling, choosing the right type of bike for you is critical.

And yes, they are different.

Since we are looking more towards a type of bike rather than a specific brand or model, I’m not going to include customer reviews this time. Including them would not be of any use when deciding between the types of bikes.

This time, the review is not about a model used for exercise, but the style of bike used to get exercise.

Spin Bikes

Pros

Intense workouts

Cons

The Breakdown— the pros

More like a real bike

If you are thinking you want to try an [easyazon_link identifier=”B002KV1MJU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]exercise bike[/easyazon_link] because you really enjoyed riding your bike as a kid, then the [easyazon_link identifier=”B06VW3HS2Q” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]spin bike[/easyazon_link] is the way to go (Star Trac makes some good ones). With the weighted flywheel and direct-contact brake system, it is going to ride more like any bike you had growing up than the other options.

However, if you try to add the streamers and a bell-like you had on your first bike, people might look at you funny.

When you are more familiar with something, it can be easier to get started and stay on track. Since it is more like your old bike than the other options, a spin bike might be the surest path to success.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B001W0F5ZC” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/412tzp4IL8L.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Intense workouts

If you are looking for the best possible workout, the [easyazon_link identifier=”B0756SBLKM” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]spin bike[/easyazon_link] is the one for you. It’s not that you can’t get a great workout on the others. But these are built with intense fat-burning and calorie burning in mind.

The ability to stand up and pedal harder certainly helps. But the most significant benefit in this regard is the prevalence of spin classes among gyms these days. With the right instructor, you can get a tremendous workout on a [easyazon_link identifier=”B00GQ9ZR7U” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]spin bike[/easyazon_link].

This, of course, doesn’t help you out if you are buying one of these for use at home. But I believe there are services online where you can view an instructor’s course. It’s not the same as being there, but it gets the job done.

However, the fast pace that is inherent with spin bikes can make it hard for novice riders to get started.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”320″ identifier=”B00UG9R7UG” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41B9ps7uBiL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”320″]View on Amazon

The Breakdown— the cons

Uncomfortable

Have you ever seen the size of the seats on one of these? Who behind actually fits on one? People that take the classes will probably say that you aren’t sitting very much if you are putting the work in like you should. But that’s just not realistic. It may be true for the fit, [easyazon_link identifier=”B01G7KAK9M” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]spin bike[/easyazon_link]-warriors types.

But if you are getting started and trying to lose weight, it just doesn’t work.

All the leaning over can be very hard for people with back issues. Spin bikes can also be hard on people having problems with joint discomfort.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B003TQ2O1U” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41l77cOug3L.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

No preset workouts

If you are a novice rider, then you may not be the most motivated to hop on a spin bike and go nuts. Chances are you are going to need a little direction. If you are attending a spin class at your local gym, you’ll get it. But if you are at home, you are going to be out of luck.

At home, the intensity and duration of your workout will be entirely up to you. Spin bikes do not come with preset programs you can use for guidance like with upright or recumbent bikes. You may be able to find some classes online.

But if you can’t set up your computer, phone, or tablet in the right position, this may not matter.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B002CVU2HG” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41Su7BpR0QL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Exercise Bikes

Upright

Pros

Very easy to use

Cons

Awkward

Not very comfortable

The Breakdown—the pros

Convenience

Let’s face it. [easyazon_link identifier=”B014VX254A” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Upright bikes[/easyazon_link] do not take up a lot of space, and they are often lighter than the other options making it easier to put the bike away when it is not in use. Some may say ‘out of sight, out of mind’ but others will be happy to make better use of the space in their homes.

Since they know they bought the bike, chances are it is not going to be forgotten anytime soon.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B01KAGX7DU” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41P0wccHYML.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Very easy to use

Spin bikes can take some getting used to as can recumbent bikes. But [easyazon_link identifier=”B01N7PO9GV” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]upright bikes[/easyazon_link] are the easiest of the bunch to get started using. All you have to do is figure out the height you need the seat to be and how much resistance you want to use.

It doesn’t matter what your current fitness level is either. All you have to do is get on and ride!

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B002KV383S” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/31sVybjHGZL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”375″]View on Amazon

The Breakdown- the cons

Awkward

Leaning over to grab the handles can put some strain on the lower back and neck. Lean on them too much, and you risk causing some wrist pain as well. The high center of gravity with an [easyazon_link identifier=”B077GSJJ8D” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]upright bike[/easyazon_link] can also make it feel a little less stable than you may like.

You can ride while sitting up or bending over. But the position you often find yourself in can be unnatural and lead to fatigue easier.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B077GSJJ8D” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41fxkOaTrDL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]

Not very comfortable

Why do bike seats have to be so darn small? Maybe when we were kids, the size of the seat was just right. But as adults, these things are too small to be comfortable. While comfort is not the purpose of an [easyazon_link identifier=”B014VX254A” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]upright exercise bike[/easyazon_link], it sure helps to keep you coming back.

Who wants to exercise when you know your behind is going to be sore five minutes in and just get worse until you quit?

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B01N7PO9GV” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41W%2Bpn6LL4L.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Recumbent

Pros

Comfort

Less prone to injuries

Cons

Too comfortable?

Space eaters

The Breakdown— the pros

Comfort

How genius! A bike with a seat that people can sit in and not be dying to get five minutes later! If that wasn’t enough, many models of [easyazon_link identifier=”B005OU4E1M” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]recumbent bikes[/easyazon_link] come with contoured backrest, armrest to help alleviate any tension in your shoulders, and yes—even a personal fan.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B002KV1MJU” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41qvpFYuMdL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

It’s the ay cycling that was always meant to be.

Less prone to injuries

Cycling, in general, is a low-impact exercise, but with the reclined style of a [easyazon_link identifier=”B00KVZM2V4″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]recumbent bike[/easyazon_link], it is pretty minimal. As a result—you are less likely to suffer any undue aches or pains that could impact your commitment to working out (other than tired muscles because you had such a good workout).

Want to save your knees, back, and neck? Go with a recumbent bike.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B005OU4E1M” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51RXVmcGDXL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]

The Breakdown—the cons

Too comfortable?

It sounds crazy, but there is such a thing as too comfortable. If you are very comfortable, you may be less apt to push yourself on a [easyazon_link identifier=”B01IVNADOU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]recumbent bike[/easyazon_link], and will not work as hard as you need to in order to get a proper workout. If you are not getting a good workout, what’s the point in using it?

There isn’t one.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B01KAGX74E” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51LfmePxpML.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Space eaters

The biggest drawback to a [easyazon_link identifier=”B00EKCCJLM” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]recumbent bike[/easyazon_link] is the size. These things are big, they are going to take up a good amount of space, and they are not easy to move once you put it together. So, if you get one, make sure you put it together in the place you plan on having it for years to come.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B00KVZM2V4″ locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41CLSqWvfeL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]

The Bottom Line

If you want to read more about all three types, among spin bike vs exercise bike, you should check out our review of Star Trac recumbent bikes. My ‘Spin Bike vs. Treadmill’ article will give you some more insight to spin bikes as will this article.

When it comes down to it, you will be able to burn calories with any of the three bikes. But for me, I will not keep up an exercise routine if I hate it. I’ve tried spin class; the seat on the [easyazon_link identifier=”B06XRSZJS9″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]spin bike[/easyazon_link] was so incredibly uncomfortable I walked out five minutes after it started.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B00KVZM2V4″ locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51q%2BrXLaA8L.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

[easyazon_link identifier=”B002JB40MC” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Upright bikes[/easyazon_link] are fine for shorter rides but if you are planning to go for 30 minutes or more—watch out. If you are looking to lose weight, you’ll need to ride for longer.

If I’m going to buy an exercise bike for the house, I’m going with the one I am not going to hate using. I’m going with a [easyazon_link identifier=”B00AQP2RJG” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]recumbent bike[/easyazon_link].

Are you having trouble picking between cycling outdoors and using a treadmill? Maybe you’re considering doing both? Today we have a head-to-head comparison between Cycling Vs Treadmill.

Personally, the treadmill provides me with everything I need for an effective workout.

I prefer treadmills because they give me more options (well, the good ones do at least!). At Gymblazer we have a list of the best treadmills within a reasonable budget. I recommend the Proform ZT10. It’s equipped with tons of workout programs, decline and incline settings, and is easy to fold away for storage.

Having said that, I do also enjoy cycling outdoors too. In which case, the Huffy bikes are my top choice. It’s great for mountain biking in particular.

Learn all you need to know about cycling and using treadmills below to help you decide which is right for you.

Cycling Vs Treadmill

Cycling vs Treadmill

What To Know About Using a Treadmill

Convenience

One of the biggest benefits of using a treadmill is that you can workout from home. If you’re tight for time, rolling out a folding treadmill and easily putting it back into storage can take mere minutes.

The ease of use associated with treadmills is what makes them so appealing to so many people.

Entertainment

A common complaint among people who have used treadmills is that it’s too boring. However, if you were to set up your phone or tablet, you’ll find time flies.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”333″ identifier=”B00M1N76QA” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41hA6w5kpzL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

You can watch your favorite shows and movies while working out. For me, this is one of the major reasons why I love using a treadmill. I can do moderately intense workouts while being engrossed in movies and series – an hour on the treadmill feels like nothing!

Customized Workouts

Treadmills that let you alter the incline and speed settings provide you with more options. Therefore, you’re able to tailor the workout to your specific goals.

You can alter how difficult or easy you’d like it to be, depending on your experience level.

Furthermore, making the workout more challenging can simply involve not holding onto the side rails. This leads to more muscles being recruited and your core is engaged to keep yourself balanced.

There are many benefits of strengthening your core too.

Serious Runners

While I am a big advocate for treadmills, I must be fair – they aren’t perfect for everyone.

Treadmills may not be the best option for serious runners. This is because many of the ones that are used for homes have a maximum speed of 12 mph – which isn’t enough for runners.

What To Know About Cycling

Exercise

Of course, the biggest benefit of cycling is exercise.

People often consider cycling to predominantly involve the legs. However, your entire body is involved throughout the activity.

Even though your legs are doing the pedaling, you’re also heavily relying on your arms to keep yourself balanced. Holding onto the handles and maintaining your position takes more work than you may think.

Cycling is a form of exercise that improves your cardiovascular system. As a result, you can become fitter, and be burning more calories to lose weight too.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”450″ identifier=”B01EWSEBSM” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41-QmZjp0%2BL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”450″]View on Amazon

Quicker & Healthier Commuting

Getting from A to B in cities can become an energy-draining and lengthy task. Sitting in traffic on the way home from work means that’s your free time being wasted. Not to mention, many people wake up earlier just to prepare and be on time for work.

Cycling means you can cut this hectic part of your life out.

Commuting on a bicycle saves time and energizes your body with a heart-pumping start to the day.

I also like how cycling is an environmentally friendly way of traveling. You produce zero carbon emissions and avoid burning fuel in congestion.

Studies show that your exposure to harmful fumes is also reduced compared to people who travel by car.

Great For All Fitness Levels

Regardless of your experience level in fitness, anyone can hop on a bike. You’re able to go as slow or as fast as you like.

Furthermore, the impact on joints is remarkably low. Therefore, if you have bad knees, cycling may be a good option to get fit while minimizing the risk of injuries.

Social Experience

Exercising alone can demotivate many people. Cycling gives you the option to go on rides with friends and family to experience it together.

This can help to make you excited about exercising by going on fun rides.

Not to mention, you can easily create a cycling group of strangers who are all into the same activity. Bicycle groups seem to be pretty friendly to one another!

It’s Fun

Simply put, cycling can be a lot of fun. Especially if you partake in mountain biking along various trails.

It can make you forget that you’re even exercising. As a result, you’re more likely to enjoy doing it more often and notice better fitness and weight loss outcomes.

Safety

Cycling on the road with other cars can be dangerous. So, you have to remain hyper-vigilant at all times and ensure that you’re wearing a helmet to keep yourself safe.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B00M1N76QA” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41PT3AhgP2L.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”467″]View on Amazon

Cycling Vs Treadmill

Now you know more about what using a treadmill and cycling has to offer. So, which one should you be using?

I found this to be a tough conclusion to come to because it really does depend on the individual.

However, to help make your choice easier, the section below is going to compare cycling and using a treadmill. You’ll then be left with a clearer picture of each to consider their main benefits and drawbacks.

What Provides Better Exercise Results?

Exercise is likely the number one thing people are looking to improve with riding bicycles and using treadmills.

In this case, it’s a tie. They’re both great for exercise. Although, for people with less time and who want a more convenient way to workout, using a treadmill from home would be best.

On the other hand, people who have a little more time to spare may enjoy the outdoors aspect of exercising more.

One downfall of cycling compared to using a treadmill for me, is that you can’t see your stats. Well, not unless you’re willing to spend extra on tech.

With treadmills, you’re given information on your time, distance, calories, and heart rate. This gives you the chance to see the areas where you need to improve more clearly than you can while cycling.

Which Is Funner?

Undoubtedly, cycling provides a better chance of socializing and having fun compared to using a treadmill.

Many find being on a treadmill becomes isolating and boring. In which case, cycling is the clear winner there.

However, if you like to exercise to be your alone time, a treadmill could be perfect. Like I mentioned earlier, I love setting up my phone and watching a series for an hour while I workout. It makes the time go by so much quicker.

Which is Best for Low Impact Workouts?

Cycling and using a treadmill are both great options for people who are concerned about their bad joints.

They are both low-impact forms of exercise. Therefore, you’re able to pedal on a bicycle without putting a lot of pressure on the knees. With treadmills, you can walk/jog/run on the surface of a with minimal effects on your joints. It’s softer than the concrete ground.

Which is the Safest Option?

You may be surprised to hear that there are over 24,000 accidents a year related to treadmills.

However, the higher risk of danger comes with cycling. Especially if you’re on the road with other cars. When it comes to cycling, being extremely aware of your surroundings is crucial.

While being on the treadmill, it can also be easy to forget to concentrate, and that’s where you can end up having an accident.

In both cases, the dangers can be minimized. Most are able to experience both completely safely, provided that they remain aware and focused.

Should You Cycle or Use a Treadmill?

There are certain benefits with cycling that you just don’t get from using a treadmill. The major ones involve being outdoors and being able to commute in a healthier, environmentally friendly way.

People interested in reducing their carbon footprint and having a more social exercise experience would be more inclined to cycle.

Having said that, there are also advantages to using a treadmill that you can’t experience with cycling. The main one being ease of use.

After a long day of work, being able to conveniently roll out a treadmill and fit my workout in is bliss. I’m also able to keep a better track of my progress by the stats provided. So, I can go in with a goal each time to either go for longer, faster and to burn more calories.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, whether you cycle or run on a treadmill, you’re still exercising. That alone puts you ahead of most.

However, there are definitely certain people who can benefit more from one than the other.

For example, people who are busier and need a quick, convenient way to workout from their home would prefer a treadmill. The Proform ZT10 is my top choice in that scenario.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B00M1N76QA” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41BwDFPbvsL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”453″]View on Amazon

Alternatively, others may want to exercise with friends and family. In which case, cycling can be more social and fun, which is a huge motivation for many.

For those purposes, I recommend the Huffy Fortress 3.0.

There are also those who can benefit from both, and that’s the camp I’m in. Personally, I incorporate cycling into my routine, but the treadmill is my first pick more often.

It all comes down to personal preference. Use the information that I’ve provided for you throughout this article. You will have a much easier time determining whether to go with cycling or a treadmill – or maybe both!

Best Exercise Bike Under $200

Perhaps you’re looking for a budget exercise bike, maybe as a first venture into the world of home fitness and bikes. We know that there are those who like a specific type of bike more than others, so there are picks for each type (recumbent, upright, spin) in this post. [easyazon_link identifier=”B007595TKU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Exerpeutic’s Folding Magnetic Upright Bike [/easyazon_link]was the top pick overall.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B007595TKU” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/410kPaOTbaL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B007595TKU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Exerpeutic Folding Bike[/easyazon_link] is a great bike with a lot of versatile uses and a great, solid build. It offers a lot of resistance levels so all levels can use It. The bike itself is sturdy and long-lasting with the folding feature making it a space saver too. Add to these that the price is low for an [easyazon_link identifier=”B007595TKU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Exerpeutic Bike[/easyazon_link].

Best Exercise Bike Under $500

Again we take a look at a few different types of bikes in this article, this time focused on mid-range bikes. Top-end home bikes can go well into four figures so this price range is modest though it’s probably above what a beginner would need.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B01KAGX74E” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/5169ALld3oL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Top prize went to the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01KAGX74E” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Schwinn 230 Recumbent Bike[/easyazon_link] is a comfortable bike to use and is also great for injury rehab and for anyone with back or leg issues. Being a recumbent bike gives it an extra comfortable seat and a normal, well supported seated position. Your legs still get a great workout though, and this model has an informative and easy to use LCD screen and panel.

Upright Exercise Bike vs Spin Bike

One of the big questions around exercise bikes is “what’s the difference between uprights and spin bikes?” Well, you can obviously see the difference, but what I mean is, what are the pro’s and con’s of each type, and how do their effects differ?

We break a few down for you too, such as the [easyazon_link identifier=”B00LSX8AA0″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Keiser M3i[/easyazon_link], talking about the specific benefits and drawbacks to the specific models which are mentioned. By the end of the article, you’ll know exactly how a spin bike differs from something like the [easyazon_link identifier=”B002KV383S” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Marcy Upright[/easyazon_link]. You’ll know which is best for you and also what uses each one is better.

For more, check out our article on upright bikes vs spin bikes.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B00PKYB34I” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41IiHC3j0IL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”463″]
View on Amazon

Exercise Bike vs Treadmill

This look at bikes against treadmills is handy if you’re unsure about which piece of equipment to use. There are a few specifics mentioned on models like the[easyazon_link identifier=”B0053Y0TAE” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Cybex 750T [/easyazon_link] and others, both treadmills and bikes.

You can find out exactly what drawbacks both the treadmill and bike have, and the benefits of both as well.

For more, check out our article on exercise bikes vs treadmills.

Spin Bike vs Recumbent Bike

While uprights can look a little like both recumbents and spin bikes, recumbents and spin bikes definitely look very different to each other. One has you in a traditional cycling position and looks like a bike, whilst the other reminds me more of a pedalo – you’re in a normal seat with your legs out in front of you to pedal.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B00467H5YW” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41Sky%2B6g7HL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Spin bikes, such as the [easyazon_link identifier=”B0090VYHMC” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Sunny Indoor Cycle[/easyazon_link], are preferred by more serious riders, especially those who are preparing for races or endurance events on an actual road bike. The recumbent is usually preferred by people who just want a good, comfortable workout. Something like the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01KAGX74E” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Schwinn 230 Recumbent Bike[/easyazon_link] is much more comfortable than a spin bike and has a lot of uses for frailer users or those with injuries. Recumbents are also great for all types of back and joint problems.

For more, check out our article on spin bikes vs recumbent bikes.

Spin Bike vs Treadmill

Spin bikes are created to be as close to an actual road bike as possible. Realism is the aim and a good spin bike, such as the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01KXN6PU2″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Merax Indoor Bike[/easyazon_link], will give a great workout and can work all attributes needed for riding a road bike.

With that said, spin bikes aren’t for everyone. If you’re using them as a supplement to other training goals, they might not be the best item for you. Take cardio for example, some people will see better improvements from using something like a treadmill instead of a spin bike. The [easyazon_link identifier=”B077J3F1DK” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Nautilus T618[/easyazon_link] is a great tool for general cardio and can be used for both aerobic and anaerobic workouts.

Best Recumbent Home Bike

Finally there are the recumbent home bikes, meaning those made for home use. These don’t need to handle a constant battering like more expensive gym equipment does, so you can save some cash and get a more specialized machine.

I have to say that I never really thought anything about my mum being short, it’s just the way she is. But that all changed when she came to me asking which was the best exercise bike for short person.

It was only then that I realized the challenges faced by shorter people when trying to get back into shape or simply stay in shape. I immediately made it my mission to discover the best folding exercise bike for short person; folding is an essential part of the equation as my mum doesn’t have the room to keep it out all the time.

Thanks to a friend who runs the local gym I was able to deal directly with a few suppliers and test their products. I’m actually quite surprised by the range available but I’m in no doubt that the [easyazon_link identifier=”B004O6TXVS” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Exerpeutic 400XL[/easyazon_link] Folding is the best of the bunch.

It offers excellent value, a full range of features and is easy to fold away; that’s perfect for my mum and the reason it wins the best folding exercise bike for short person award.

It’s also very easy to get on and off; that’s an essential factor when you’re hovering round 5ft tall; you can’t swing your leg over a high bar unless you’re already a gymnast.

Of course exercise is only part of the equation if you’re trying to lose weight.

Best folding exercise bike for short person

Best Folding Exercise Bike For Short Person – Exerpeutic 400XL

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B004O6TXVS” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Exerpeutic 400XL[/easyazon_link] regularly tops many different polls and with good reason. It’s a semi-recumbent bike which makes it good for those with back or knee injuries. The price is affordable but the product is not cheap.

Perhaps most important is the fact that the company behind Exerpeutic exercise bikes is Paradigm; a company known for its commitment to the best quality products.

Semi-recumbent

Weighs 39 pounds

V-belt drive

Manual Resistance knob

Easy To Fold

Open dimensions 46” x 19” x 33”

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B004O6TXVS” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41HRWRAnPuL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”330″]

View on Amazon

Advantages

Ease Of Foldability

When choosing the best folding exercise bike for short person it is essential that the bike is easy to fold. This is definitely true of the [easyazon_link identifier=”B004O6TXVS” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Exerpeutic 400XL[/easyazon_link].

All you need to do is slide two pins out of the frame. You can then bring the legs together and move the computer post downwards. To finish slide the pins back into position and it’s locked into the folded position.

When folded it measures 54” x 17” x 20”. Then it’s as easy as tipping it onto the back legs where there are wheels to help you slide it across the floor and into your cupboard. You’ll be surprised where it will fit.

Features

This bike may only weigh 39 pounds but it is designed to take up to 300 pounds. It will remain surprisingly stable as you ride it and with the seat just 24” from the ground and only 21” to the handlebars almost anyone can ride this machine.

The screen on the bike is simple but effective. It will tell you your distance, speed, time exercised, calories burned and heart rate. You’ll need to have your hands on the sensors in the handlebars to monitor your heart rate. You can manually cycle through the info or you can leave it to scan through at its own pace.

Adjustable

The seat can be moved up and down and back to forth; helping you to get the best possible position on your bike. The fact it is a semi-recumbent allows you to get the benefits of upright cycling while having your back supported.

There is also an adjustable knob in front of the seat that allows you to adjust the resistance while you’re riding. This is easy to do and surprisingly accurate. The level of resistance is controlled by a magnetic pad and how close it is to the flywheel.

The bike uses a V belt which is exceptional smooth and makes nearly no noise; allowing you to watch television as you ride, if you wish.

Disadvantages

No bike is perfect and there are a few very small issues with the [easyazon_link identifier=”B004O6TXVS” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Exerpeutic 400XL[/easyazon_link]; but these are fairly minor.

Back Of Seat Doesn’t Adjust

It is disappointing to note that the back of the seat is not adjustable. It is set at a slight angle to encourage the recumbent position and most people find it is perfectly adequate; my mum included.

But there are those that have struggled with the seat; making the back adjustable would make a big difference.

Squeaks

If you’re dedicated and use the Exerpeutic 400XL on a regular basis it is likely that the V belt will start to squeak. Unfortunately there is not a lot you can do about this.

Screen Not Backlit

The information on the screen should be seen as more of a guide than factually correct. However this is largely irrelevant as the screen is not back lit; making it very hard to read in poor light.

Runner Up – Marcy NS-652 Foldable Exercise Bike

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B0090OKG38″ locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41W96LoV92L.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]

View on Amazon

Marcy is a brand of exercise bike marketed by Impex; who started trading in 1982 and are now recognized as a leader in the fitness field. They offer products in most fitness sectors and are proud to have some of the best products on the market.

Weight 37 pounds

Maximum weight 250lbs

Foldable

Dimensions 32” x 18” x 42”

8 Resistance levels

Advantages

Adjustability

The first thing you’ll be impressed by on the [easyazon_link identifier=”B0090OKG38″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Marcy NS-652[/easyazon_link] is that everything is adjustable. The floor to seat height is 33 inches; this is at the top end of acceptable for anyone round 5ft; but it’s easy to get onto thanks to the step through style.

The seat moves up and down effortlessly and brings you closer or further away from the handlebars at the same time; depending on what you need.

Of course it can also be folded away in a matter of moments. Simply release the pin and bring the legs together before sliding it into your cupboard. Once folded the bike is just 32” x 18” x 42”. Again you’ll be able to fit it into almost any cupboard.

Features

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B0090OKG38″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Marcy NS-652[/easyazon_link] is fantastic if you want to keep a track of what you are doing. The display is large enough to be easily seen while exercising and shows you calories burned, speed, distance and the time you’ve spent exercising.

Alongside this there is an adjustable resistance knob which has 8 different settings. The idea is that you can challenge yourself or others on different levels to push your body harder; increasing the benefits.

This makes it feel much more like you’re riding outside.

Quality

The bike weighs less than 40 pounds and yet it is very stable when being ridden. This is partly to do with the fact that the centre of gravity is so low. But it also relates to the quality of the design and the materials used to create it.

In addition the design is very simple. This ensures you concentrate on what matters; exercising.

Disadvantages

Lack Of Heart Rate Sensors

Monitoring your heart rate is an important part of getting back into shape. It’s disappointing to note that the [easyazon_link identifier=”B0090OKG38″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Marcy NS-652[/easyazon_link] doesn’t have heart rate sensor grips or the ability to link to a chest monitor. This is part of the reason it’s a runner up and not the winning bike.

No Transport Wheels

Although the NS-652 is not the heaviest of bikes it is still disappointing that there are no transport wheels. This would make it much easier to slide the bike away when not in use. As it is there’s a good possibility you’ll simply leave it sitting in the way; which will become frustrating.

ProGear 225 Foldable Exercise Bike

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B01N7PO9GV” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41W%2Bpn6LL4L.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]

View on Amazon

ProGear is actually an Australian company that specializes in providing high quality bikes for road and trail use. More recently they have moved into the fitness market and their exercise bikes are proving to be quite a hit.

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B01N7PO9GV” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]ProGear 225 foldable exercise bike[/easyazon_link] is for anyone looking for a compact exercise bike on a budget. It’s designed for people between 5ft 1” and 6ft; making t a top contender for the best folding exercise bike for short person award.

Weight 34.8 pounds

Dimensions 32” x 17” x 46”

Capacity 220lbs

Heart Rate Monitor

6 Resistance levels

Dual Transmission Flywheel

Transportation wheels

Advantages

Innovative Design

The basic design is simple and much like many other foldable upright exercise bikes, a simple ‘X’. However the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01N7PO9GV” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]ProGear 225[/easyazon_link] also features a dual transmission flywheel. In lay person terms this means there is the possibility to double the resistance and really make it difficult to ride.

The dual flywheel also ensures that the ride is exceptionally smooth despite the fact that the bike is not the heaviest option on the market.

Add to this transportation wheels and you have a bike that has been designed to be used and stored at home, no matter how small your place is.

Folded it measures just 19” x 17” x 53”.

Features

The ProGear 225 has the same basic features as the other bikes on this best folding exercise bike for short person list. The best feature is the 8 resistance settings which are controlled via the knob below the screen. The resistance ranges from barely noticeable to tough enough for a proven athlete to struggle. That gives you plenty of scope to improve.

The 3 piece cranking system and the dual transmission flywheel provide an incredibly smooth ride.

You can adjust the seat up and down easily by relocating the pin. This also moves you closer or further away from the handlebars.

LCD Screen

The LCD screen displays the usual information; calories burned, distance travelled, speed, time and your heart rate. You do need to be holding onto the heart rate sensors to get your heart rate reading.

Disadvantages

Weight Capacity

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B01N7PO9GV” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]ProGear 225[/easyazon_link] can only handle 220 pounds; that the lowest rating of these 3 bikes and a real disappointment. While many people will already be below this weight ProGear are effectively penalizing those that potentially need the bike the most.

Lack of Programs

None of these bikes actually have fitness programs or a way to record your data. This is one area where it would be great to see some improvement. After all, competing against yourself is a great way to improve your fitness level.

Ready To Get The Best Folding Exercise Bike For Short Person?

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B0090OKG38″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Marcy NS-652[/easyazon_link] has a lot of potential, especially as it is so easy to jump on and get started. However, a few key issues such as the heart rate monitor prevent it from being the best folding exercise bike for a short person.

Having knee problems is not a rare problem. Over the years wear and tear begins to take its’ toll. Injuries can speed this process up as well, or leave a joint permanently weakened. Whether it’s ligament issues, arthritis, or something else, having knee issues can be limiting to your exercise. A good idea for those who suffer from bad knees is to use low-impact exercise such as cycling. Our recommendation for the best exercise bike for knee problems is the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01MS7EWR9″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike[/easyazon_link].

Using a bike also allows you to strengthen the tendons, ligaments, and especially the surrounding muscular structure. The impact is minimal while the knee and legs, in general, are worked and strengthened. This can actually improve some conditions such as arthritis or can be used as a part of injury rehabilitation.

Keep in mind there are different styles of exercise bikes and the different positions can affect the strain placed on your knees. Our recommendations are mostly recumbent bikes, as recumbent bikes place the least strain on your knees. Other types of bike are still useful for those with less delicate knees, or who are in the advanced stages of injury recovery, so we have included an upright and a spin bike recommendation as well. You can find out more about the differences between bike types by reading our articles on Upright Bikes vs Spin Bikes and Spin Bikes vs Exercise Bikes.

Best Exercise Bike For Knee Problems – Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike

Schwinn are a great supplier of stationary bikes and the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01MS7EWR9″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] 270[/easyazon_link] is an excellent model. This bike has plenty of features combined with solid construction and high comfort levels. For people who want the best possible bike whilst dealing with knee issues, you can’t go wrong with the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01MS7EWR9″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] Schwinn 270 recumbent bike[/easyazon_link].

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B01MS7EWR9″ locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41KpcmUeJHL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Benefits

High Comfort Levels

This bike comes with a thick, padded seat which can be adjusted so you’re in the most appropriate position for you when cycling. The seat is designed to give plenty of ergonomic support to your back and the seatback is also vented, allowing cool air to flow through when in use. The built-in fan adds to this by giving even more ventilation and can be great to help keep cool during intense workouts.

Variety of Workout Levels/Options

There are 25 different resistance levels on the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01MS7EWR9″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] Schwinn 270 Recumbent bike[/easyazon_link], and it also has 29 programs to choose from. These include workouts of varying difficulty alongside test type settings.

Customization

Along with being able to adjust the bike for your build and choosing your own workouts and resistance levels, this bike also has user profile memory as standard. That means you can store your stats and monitor your progress over time. Storing this data is great for people who struggle to remember exactly what workout they did or how they performed.

Dual-Track Gives Lots of Info

Having a split-screen set up, thanks to DualTrack technology, allows the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01MS7EWR9″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] Schwinn 270[/easyazon_link] to display a variety of information at a glance. You can see your current progress in terms of calories burned, time elapsed, and more. At the same time, you can view your overall progress within the session or other info for comparison. These stats are easy to transfer on to an external device either to store or for further analysis.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B01MS7EWR9″ locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51ZpX3WKjyL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Extras

[easyazon_link identifier=”B01MS7EWR9″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Schwinn’s 270 Recumbent[/easyazon_link] is easy to move around despite its’ weight because it has transport wheels installed on the bottom. Simply lift at one end, tilting the bike, and wheel it away to wherever you require.

Drawbacks

Expensive

There aren’t any real drawbacks to this recommendation other than the price. It’s more expensive than our other options though you get what you pay for in this case.

Best Space Saving Option – Exerpeutic 400XL Folding Recumbent Bike

Our folding bike choice is the [easyazon_link identifier=”B004O6TXVS” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] Exerpeutic 400XL folding recumbent bike[/easyazon_link]. This isn’t an entirely recumbent bike, and should probably be described as semi-recumbent. The position is still more comfortable for many people than an upright though, and it folds away with ease. To find out more on some alternative recumbent bikes, check out our post on the best recumbent bikes.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B004O6TXVS” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41HRWRAnPuL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”330″]
View on Amazon

Benefits

Doesn’t Take Up Much Space

This bike isn’t as big as most recumbent bikes when setting up. It measures 33”x19”x46” when assembled and can be folded away easily. It also only weighs around 40 lbs so shouldn’t be too difficult to move when folded.

Quiet & Smooth

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B004O6TXVS” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] 400XL[/easyazon_link] doesn’t make much noise when in use. It also doesn’t jam or wobble at all, staying steady and smooth in its’ operation.

Cheap

[easyazon_link identifier=”B004O6TXVS” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Exerpeutics 400XL folding bike[/easyazon_link] is cheaper than most recumbent options, making it a popular choice.

Drawbacks

Durability

Although this bike comes with a 1-year warranty, there have been reports of this bike beginning to wear out a little over time. That could mean it needs replacing after a few years depending on how much you use it. The price isn’t over the top, so this is acceptable to some. Also, keep in mind that many users haven’t had any durability issues.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B004O6TXVS” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41pP5KHMQzL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

No User Profiles

There’s no ability to enter personal info into the [easyazon_link identifier=”B004O6TXVS” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]400XL bike[/easyazon_link] so it can’t figure out statistics for you, and also won’t remember any settings.

Lack of Adjustability

Now, this is a tricky area. The bike is actually quite adjustable and can be comfortably used by most people. The stated heights are 5’2” – 6’2”. We have found shorter users may be able to get by, perhaps to around 5’ in height, whilst taller users are likely to struggle. Even at 6’2” you’re probably going to max out some of the adjustments, so the ideal sizes are more like 5’2” – 6’.

Best Upright Option – Exerpeutic Folding Magnetic Upright Bike

Exerpeutic get another bike into our picks for this article with the [easyazon_link identifier=”B007595TKU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] Exerpeutic Folding Magnetic Upright Bike[/easyazon_link]. As the name suggests, this is another folding bike and is our choice out of the uprights. It’s also a magnetic bike which means it uses a magnetic flywheel to create resistance. This is a smooth and reliable method that tends to work well though the flywheel may need replacing after a few years of heavy use if you want the resistance to stay the same.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B007595TKU” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41copX1fBwL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Benefits

Compact

As the name suggests, this is another folding bike from Exerpeutic. It folds away quickly and easily for storage, ideal for those in cramped spaces.

Smooth Operation

The magnetic flywheel and a smooth pedal motion make the [easyazon_link identifier=”B007595TKU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] Exerpeutic Folding Upright bike[/easyazon_link] very stable and smooth to ride. This model also doesn’t wobble or cause any crazy vibrations through the floor, making it a great choice for apartment dwellers.

Easy to Assemble

There aren’t many steps involved when building this [easyazon_link identifier=”B007595TKU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] Exerpeutic Magnetic bike[/easyazon_link]. It can be constructed in 15-20 minutes quite easily and the required tools are included.

Drawbacks

Reliability

As with the Exerpeutic recumbent bike, this one has had problems with wear when putting through intense use. It appears to be designed for light to moderate use and not heavy/intense sessions. Again there’s a 1-year warranty included though after this time you’ll need to fix/replace it yourself if anything happens.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B007595TKU” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/410kPaOTbaL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Comfort

Uprights, in general, are less comfortable than recumbent bikes, because the seat has no back support and is smaller. With the [easyazon_link identifier=”B007595TKU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] Exerpeutic folding upright bike[/easyazon_link] the seat is a controversial area, with some claiming it’s comfortable while others don’t like it and want a larger, more padded seat. This should be kept in mind when ordering.

Best Spin Bike Option – Sunny Indoor Cycling Bike (SF-B1203)

Sunny is a mid-market brand that combines good quality with affordable pricing. Spin bikes are preferred for their realism related to outdoor cycling and aren’t often recommended for bad knees. If you are just completing rehab or have other reasons to use one though, the [easyazon_link identifier=”B0090VYHMC” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] Sunny Indoor Cycling Bike[/easyazon_link] is our pick for you. If you want to check out some alternative spin bikes, specifically Precor bikes, click on this link.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B0090VYHMC” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41Td1%2BUHbUL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Benefits

Cheap

When it comes to spin bikes, this is a very affordable option. Sunny’s [easyazon_link identifier=”B0090VYHMC” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] SF-B1203 indoor cycle[/easyazon_link] comes in cheaper than most spin bikes and can compete with most options in the mid-range.

Comfort

The alignment is a little different on this bike when compared to other spin bikes. It gives a bit more comfort for the user and allows the knees a bit of a better position than some other bikes.

Drawbacks

Size Restrictions

A lot of users say that being even 6’ is too tall to use this unit. The [easyazon_link identifier=”B0090VYHMC” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] Sunny SF-B1203 indoor cycle[/easyazon_link] is only adjustable at the seat, which can be moved forwards/back or up/down. With this being the only adjustable part, some people are going to struggle to find a comfortable position.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B0090VYHMC” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/4128mopM4aL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Reliability

The trade-off for a cheap and functional spin bike like this comes in build quality. The materials used to build this bike aren’t the best and there are reports of bent or broken parts. The [easyazon_link identifier=”B0090VYHMC” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] Sunny SF-B1203[/easyazon_link] sometimes has issues with creaking/clicking noises as well.

Best Budget Option – Exerpeutic 900XL Extended Capacity Recumbent Bike

For those who want a fully recumbent bike at a bargain price, we present the [easyazon_link identifier=”B005OU4E1M” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] Exerpeutic 900XL Extended Capacity Recumbent Bike[/easyazon_link]. Yes, Exerpeutic again. This bike is user-friendly, cheap, and great for users with knee problems.
Benefits

Comfortable & User Friendly

Once assembled, this bike has an open layout which makes it easy to climb on and off. Comfort levels are high thanks to a large, padded seat with back support.

Cheap

There are very few recumbent bikes in this price range, so you’ll really struggle to beat the [easyazon_link identifier=”B005OU4E1M” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] Exerpeutic 900XL[/easyazon_link] without going a fair bit higher in price.

Reliable

Exerpeutic have opted for reliability with their updated version of the [easyazon_link identifier=”B005OU4E1M” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] 900XL recumbent bike[/easyazon_link]. It comes with a 3 year frame warranty and doesn’t seem to have any problems with squeaking, clicking or broken/damaged parts.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B005OU4E1M” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41%2BemPwIB5L.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Drawbacks

Limited Resistance Range

There are only 8 resistance levels to work through, making this quite limited for those who want a big range of progress. Combined with the fact there are no pre-programmed workouts, it makes this bike a bit limited for variety and better suited to dedicated users.

Poor Instructions

Many users report the instructions included with this model are tough to follow. Exerpeutic need to fix this if they want the [easyazon_link identifier=”B005OU4E1M” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] 900XL[/easyazon_link] to see increased popularity.

Lack of Features

Other than a basic display, there aren’t any real advanced features on this bike.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B005OU4E1M” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51tn22zADML.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Bottom Line

Clearly there’s a wide range of bikes here, depending on your needs. I wholeheartedly recommend the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01MS7EWR9″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Schwinn 270[/easyazon_link] over the alternatives unless you specifically want a folding/upright/spin/budget bike.

Exercise bikes are popular all over the world, whether in a gym or at home. There are different styles of bikes (spin, upright, recumbent) and a variety of price ranges which come with different levels of comfort, reliability, and different features. Today we’re looking at upright bikes, but not just any type of upright. No, today we’re focusing on shorter users and upright bikes which would suit them. If you just want a quick recommendation for the Best Upright Exercise Bike for Short Person, I’d suggest you look at the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01KAGX7DU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Schwinn 130 Upright Bike[/easyazon_link]. It’s reliable, solid, and can handle users who are 4’10” or taller. There are some alternatives here if you’re shorter than that. Take a look through and see which bike suits your needs and has the features you’d prefer.

Now, let’s take a look at the bikes!

Best Overall – Schwinn 130 Upright Exercise Bike

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B01KAGX7DU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Schwinn 130[/easyazon_link] is a mid-range option with lots of features and plenty of reliability. Schwinn has a length history when it comes to bikes. Originally founded in 1895, Schwinn bicycles took less than a year to make an impact, clocking up more race wins in their first year than any of the other 300+ cycle companies in the United States. From there they tweaked their technology continuously and stayed a top name in the bike industry.

In the 1960’s they decided to take this knowledge and apply it to indoor bikes, allowing athletes to train effectively and comfortably. These days they also produce other cardio equipment, although their bikes are still one of Schwinn’s most popular products.

Benefits

Highly Adjustable

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B01KAGX7DU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Schwinn 130 Upright[/easyazon_link] has a big range of movement for the seat to move through, so it can be used by different heights. It’s pretty easy to do this too, making it ideal if more than one person is going to use it. The handlebars are also adjustable which is important for shorter people because non-adjustable handlebars can leave you in an uncomfortable position. This bike can accommodate users from 5’ tall up to 6’1”, so it covers most common heights and shorter users – but isn’t good for tall users. With that said, it’s tough to find a bike that can adjust enough for a short person AND a tall person, with this one being able to fit taller users than most alternatives.

The adjustments in two places also mean this is a comfortable bike for most users instead of just being one for shorter people. The movement of the handlebars can accommodate build differences and give you a more comfortable position.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B01KAGX7DU” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41×8-DdCGJL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Lots of Workout Variations

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B01KAGX7DU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Schwinn 130[/easyazon_link] comes with 20 resistance levels which is a lot of variation. At the top end, even veteran cyclists are going to get a good workout, while the bottom end is easy enough for a complete beginner to get started without too much trouble. Having 20 levels means you can make jumps between levels smaller and easier to deal with, which is great for keeping your confidence and motivation high.

There are 22 different workout programs available as well, so it’s not only resistance you can change up. The different workouts can be used to focus on improving different areas or to do different types of workouts, such as intervals or hill work. Some of the workouts also track your heart rate and work based on that, so they’re tailored to your level of fitness. There’s enough here for you to change it up while sticking to the same goal as well, so using the bike stays interesting for you.

Useful Extras

Schwinn has fitted a few little extras to this bike, such as a USB port for charging/media use and a bottle holder to keep a drink handy. There’s a shelf for you to place a tablet on and forearm rests for the handles (which include heart rate monitors). There’s even a built-in multi-speed fan to keep you cool and two screens of data from the built-in console, giving you plenty of stats to view when cycling. To top it off, this bike comes with its own speakers built-in as well – way more features than most other bikes at the same price!

Reliable Warranty

Warranty for the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01KAGX7DU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Schwinn 130 Upright Exercise Bike[/easyazon_link] is solid, covering the frame (10 years), parts (2 years), electronics (1 year) and even the labor for a short time (90 days). It’s solid in most areas anyway, the warranty gives extra piece of mind though.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B01KAGX7DU” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41IgZXNOyTL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Quiet & Comfortable

We already covered the position being movable and comfortable for most users in the adjustability section. The handlebars themselves are also comfortable though, with a nice angle to keep wrists comfortable and a slender surface to grip. The seat is also a little bigger than standard bike saddles and is covered with soft foam. It’s not a luxurious seat but it’s better than a hard plastic saddle.

The bike stays quiet when in use as well. The pedals go through their motion smoothly and without causing any noise or vibration. They’re counterbalanced too so they start to slow naturally if you stop pedaling, and switching resistance is quiet as well because this bike uses a magnetic resistance system.

Drawbacks

Unreliable Pedals

Now you’ll remember I said this bike is reliable, and it is. There is a weak point though, and that’s the pedals. These can break quite easily but Schwinn is pretty good at sending out replacements, especially since they know this is an issue on the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01KAGX7DU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]130[/easyazon_link]. Get in touch with them if you have any problems, and they should help you out pretty fast.

Awkward Assembly

Speaking of fast, one part which isn’t fast is assembling this bike. It can take over an hour to put together and is best done in pairs, though it would be possible to do solo if you have a little DIY experience.

Best on a Budget – ProGear 225 Foldable Magnetic Exercise Bike

ProGear aren’t as well-known as Schwinn but they’re gaining recognition already for creating cheap, reliable home gym equipment. Their models aren’t as fancy or reliable as commercial-grade equipment but they provide a good starting point for home exercisers. Their [easyazon_link identifier=”B01N7PO9GV” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]225 Foldable Upright[/easyazon_link] bike is a great choice for your first upright bike, especially for shorter users.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B01N7PO9GV” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41W%2Bpn6LL4L.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Benefits

Cheap

The biggest pro for this bike is how little the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01N7PO9GV” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]ProGear 225[/easyazon_link] costs. It’s a real budget option making it an ideal first bike for newcomers. The low cost also makes it easily replaceable if you decide to upgrade or if something does happen to go wrong.

Space Saving & Easy to Move

Once folded the bike only measures 19”x17.5”x53” and weighs around 35 lbs. This is very small and light yet it still has wheels attached to make movement even easier. You could just fold this up and put it in a cupboard when not needed. Even when unfolded and ready for use, it doesn’t take up a massive amount of room so you don’t NEED to put it away if space is tight.

Quiet & Comfortable

Pedals move smoothly thanks to their 3 piece crank system and despite being a little louder than a magnetic system, it’s still pretty quiet. The pedals themselves are big and easy to push against, made from a solid material too. The seat on the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01N7PO9GV” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]225[/easyazon_link] is also oversized and quite comfortable.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B01N7PO9GV” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41YVpYZcZpL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Drawbacks

Lack of Info

[easyazon_link identifier=”B01N7PO9GV” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]ProGear’s 225 Upright Bike[/easyazon_link] only gives feedback on time, speed, distance, calories and pulse. The pulse monitor is the only extra too, as there isn’t a tablet holder/shelf or bottle holder. A budget bike is better off trimming these extras and focusing on quality anyway though. The screen also only displays one stat at a time.

Limited Workout Options

With only 8 levels covering the entire resistance range, you may need to make larger jumps than you’d like to. If you want a good workout it’s quite likely you’re going to be stuck at the same range of 2-4 levels for a while which can feel demotivating. There also aren’t any programmed workouts so you have to figure out your own session, which again limits your options and variety (for most people).

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B01N7PO9GV” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/415u0gMc2HL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Not for Large Users

The max weight for this bike is 220 lbs, not especially heavy. The height range recommended is 5’ – 6’, pretty standard and favoring shorter users instead of taller ones.

Best for Shortest Users – FitLeader FX2 Upright Indoor Folding Exercise Bike

Fitleader is a newer brand, having been around for only a few years. Most new brands struggle to make an impact. The mistake of offering cheap, low-quality products is often their downfall. The [easyazon_link identifier=”B013OWDR3C” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Fitleader FX2 Upright Bike[/easyazon_link] is different though, it has a respectable build quality and sticks to the basics, making it reliable if a little boring. The difference between this bike and others is that it is targeted at shorter users – going as low as 4’6”!

Benefits

Great for Short Users

Having a small size and an adjustable seat makes this perfect for small users. It supports users up to 250lbs in weight though the height restrictions say this bike works for heights of 4’6” – 5’1”. This is designed for teenagers and short users. If you’re over 5’ it can be a little awkward to use, and over 5’3” it becomes practically unusable.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B013OWDR3C” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41i59opjELL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Cheap

The price for the [easyazon_link identifier=”B013OWDR3C” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]FX2[/easyazon_link] is also low, which would be expected from a new company aiming at the lower end of the market.

Space Saving

[easyazon_link identifier=”B013OWDR3C” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]FitLeaders FX2[/easyazon_link] measures 35”x22”x52” and can be folded up so it takes even less space. Weighing around 50 lbs and equipped with wheels, it’s easy to move.

Drawbacks

Basic Display

The display is fairly basic, limited to calories, time, distance, and pulse. There are no other options and the display console is very basic.

Poor Handlebars

Some people have pointed out the [easyazon_link identifier=”B013OWDR3C” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]FitLeader FX2 Upright Folding Bike[/easyazon_link] has very simple handlebars. They’re straight, hard, and not very big. Some might find them a little uncomfortable. Wearing a pair of light, comfortable gloves can be helpful. The small size and lack of adjustability is a bigger problem though.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B013OWDR3C” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41wccPTCJpL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Final Word – Best Upright Exercise Bike for Short Person

As you can see, your choice will depend on your needs. Users under 5’ tall are best off with the [easyazon_link identifier=”B013OWDR3C” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Fitleader FX2[/easyazon_link] but anybody taller should go for the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01KAGX7DU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Schwinn 130[/easyazon_link] – as long as you can afford it!

Upright bikes are those with a small seat, similar to an actual bike saddle, and which keep you sitting upright when cycling. These differ from recumbent bikes which don’t resemble a bike at all, and spin bikes which are ultra-realistic. For this type of bike, $500 covers quite a range of options, reaching the high end of the mid-range options. Only the best bikes are outside of your budget here. Our overall pick for the best upright exercise bike under $500 would be the [easyazon_link identifier=”B00KVZM2HS” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Schwinn AD2 Airdyne Bike[/easyazon_link]. For overall bike recommendations under $500, of all types, check out our Best Exercise Bike Under $500 post.

Through my years of using bikes both in gyms and outside them, Schwinn has proven to be a reliable brand. Their [easyazon_link identifier=”B00KVZM2HS” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]AD2 Airdyne[/easyazon_link] is a great example of high quality design combined with versatility and a range of options.

There are a number of reasons why some people prefer upright bikes are to recumbents. For starters, they are more like actual cycling and work more muscle groups, such as the abs and upper body. Uprights also take up less space and come in fold away versions too.

When compared to spin bikes, these are easier for to use for some users and more comfortable. They also tend to be cheaper, though for a full breakdown of uprights against spin bikes, you can take a look at our Upright Bike vs Spin Bike article.

View on Amazon

Overall Top Pick – Schwinn AD2 Airdyne Bike

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B00KVZM2HS” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Schwinn AD2 Airdyne[/easyazon_link] is a bit different from many uprights because it has moving arms which give an upper body workout too. This is actually what put this bike ahead of the others because it gives more of a return for your time. Schwinn Fitness was created from Schwinn Bicycles in the 1800’s, so this is a company that really knows how to create great bikes.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B00KVZM2HS” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41IAr8%2BMYBL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Benefits

Extra Fitness Development

Having the arm bars means your arms are actively working as well, rather than just supporting your position. You’re also in the upright position which should be engaging your core. Combining these will see more improvements in tone, more calories burned, and more improvements to your cardiovascular system. All of this without investing extra time into a workout!

Resistance is Completely Customizable

With [easyazon_link identifier=”B00KVZM2HS” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Schwinn’s AD2 Airdyne Bike[/easyazon_link] you are using an air resistance system. This means the harder and faster you try to pedal, the more resistance works against you to make it more difficult. The system can give potentially limitless resistance because of this, so resistance is literally down to your own choices.

Money-Back Guarantee

From authorised dealers you can receive a 60 day money-back guarantee on the [easyazon_link identifier=”B00KVZM2HS” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]AD2 Airdyne[/easyazon_link]. You can try it out and se*e if it’s for you with peace of mind by taking advantage of this offer.

Quick & Easy to Build

This bike’s a lot easier to build than many other uprights. You can do this one in 5-10 mins without much issue whereas many bikes will take twice that long. Instructions are really easy to follow as well, there aren’t many parts involved nor are there many steps in the process.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B00KVZM2HS” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41BFa5o1hwL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Reliability

Most of these bikes have been sturdy and reliable for their users, though it seems quality control hasn’t been perfect and a couple of models have suffered early breakages. The number of bikes this has happened to is a tiny percentage of what’s out there, so we feel quite confident saying this is almost certain to be a reliable product – just keep in mind that tiny chance of getting unlucky with a dud!

Drawbacks

Warranty is Short

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B00KVZM2HS” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Schwinn AD2 Airdyne[/easyazon_link] comes with a 3 month labor warranty, 1 year on parts, and 5 years on the frame. The frame is definitely solid enough for that not to matter, it’s the 1-year parts and only 3 months on labor which are an issue. With a dud, if something happens a few months in, you’re out of the labor costs. If it manages to last barely a year, you’re stuck on parts too.

Lack of Advanced Features

The LCD display gives basic info such as RPM, time, speed, distance, and calories burned. It doesn’t really do much other than that, and since this is a bike without pre-set resistances, there aren’t any guided workouts or programs.

Most Comfortable Option – Sunny Fitness SF-B2721 Semi-Recumbent Upright Bike

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B07BDPDZWD” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Sunny SF-B2721[/easyazon_link] is an upright bike with the seat just slightly further back – and swapped from a saddle to a recumbent bike style seat. It’s a unique creation that stands out in a field of similar looking products.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B07BDPDZWD” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41f%2BvDahB3L.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Benefits

Compact, Lightweight Space Saver

This bike can actually be folded away to take up a space of only 12”x20”x57”. That makes it perfect for tight spaces, you can literally put it in the cupboard afterward. It also weighs only 17kg so moving it around is easy for anyone. When fully set up it still doesn’t have a huge footprint, so it’s even good for in-office use.

Comfortable

The adjustability of the seat and handlebars is good, and having a big recumbent style seat makes this very comfortable compared to any other upright bike.

Quiet & Smooth

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B07BDPDZWD” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Sunny Semi-Recumbent Upright[/easyazon_link] uses a magnetic resistance system. That makes it very smooth to operate. Resistance is adjusted with a knob that you can turn easily during use, choosing between 10 resistance levels. The bike runs smoothly without any noise or vibration, perfect for quiet areas.

Sturdy Build

This upright has a sturdy frame made partly from steel. Despite the solid construction, it retains the advantage of being lightweight thanks to swapping out the frame parts which aren’t subject to much stress for lighter materials than steel, though they remain strong.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B07BDPDZWD” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41qNbxCscGL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Drawbacks

Less of the Body is Worked

As the name suggests, this is a [easyazon_link identifier=”B07BDPDZWD” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Sunny Semi-Recumbent Bike[/easyazon_link], so you are getting less overall development than with a pure upright bike. Still, the extra comfort could mean you’re okay working for longer, though the gains would be focused more on your legs than with a standard upright.

No Advanced Features

This bike doesn’t have many features either, outside of adjustable resistance and the ability to track metrics like time, calories burned, and heart rate. The heart rate monitor is as advanced as this bike gets.

Poor Holder Placements

The drinks bottle holder is behind the seat, which is fine with most uprights – but not behind a bulky recumbent seat. [easyazon_link identifier=”B07BDPDZWD” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Sunny’s SF-B2721 Bike[/easyazon_link] also has the phone holder right in front of the LCD console, so your view could be blocked depending on what phone you use.

Best on a Budget – Marcy Upright Bike ME-708

Marcy creates a wide range of cardio equipment and offer several budget bargains. The [easyazon_link identifier=”B002KV383S” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Marcy Upright ME-708[/easyazon_link] is a basic bike with good reliability. Like other Marcy budget picks, it comes in at the cheaper end of the price range. For some users, especially beginners and first-timers, this is the perfect purchase to get started with indoor upright bikes.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B002KV383S” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41ZCrVY-hfL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”284″]
View on Amazon

Benefits

Smooth & Quiet

This bike has a magnetic resistance system, this time with 8 levels to select from. Again having a magnetic system means the resistance can be switched quickly and easily whilst the pedaling motion stays smooth. There’s no jarring at all, neither is there any clicking or banging. This isn’t a silent bike, but it is pretty quiet. There’s also not much vibration, and a basic rubber mat can eliminate the little vibration that does occur if it’s an issue.

Solid Build

The frame of the bike itself is very strong. It supports users of up to 300 lbs and doesn’t show any sign of struggling. With how solid the bike is and the simplicity of its’ design, the [easyazon_link identifier=”B002KV383S” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Marcy ME-708[/easyazon_link] should last for a few years without much trouble.

Cheap

You could literally buy this bike a few times over for the same price as one high-end model. Even mid-range models can cost 2-3 times what the [easyazon_link identifier=”B002KV383S” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Marcy Upright Bike[/easyazon_link] does, so it’s not too tough an investment to make.

Lightweight

While this bike doesn’t fold away and retains a bulky central area at the bottom of the bike, it doesn’t actually weigh that much. Coming in at around 40 lbs, this is easy to pick up and move around.

Easily Viewed Screen

The console is easy to view thanks to big clear numbers and good placement. It displays time, speed, distance, and calories. There’s also a total mileage which is your lifetime use of the bike. There’s an option to automatically switch between readouts too, handy for those who are into stat tracking.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B002KV383S” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41U33LB2TmL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Drawbacks

Lack of Features

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B002KV383S” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]ME-708[/easyazon_link] only displays the four stats mentioned before, and doesn’t have any programs or other information. It also doesn’t include basic features like a drinks holder or phone stand. Resistance is also limited to only 8 levels, so you might sometimes be frustrated at the amount it jumps. It’s also limited at the top end for advanced athletes who need multiple tough levels to vary between.

Some Cheaper Plastic Parts

The internal steel frame is solid, but there is some plastic covering which is prone to be cracked or damaged.

Can be Uncomfortable

Some users have reported the seat isn’t very padded. If comfort is important to you, you might not want to change it. However there are plenty of happy users too, and some of those who had problems found that a simple gel cover solved the issue.

Longer Assembly

Assembly time for this bike can easily run to an hour and sometimes longer. There are a couple of tricky steps though the instructions are pretty clear, thankfully. Follow them carefully and you should be fine, just remember this won’t be a quick job – though it is quite doable alone.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B002KV383S” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/31sVybjHGZL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”375″]
View on Amazon

Conclusion – Best Upright Exercise Bike Under $500

Basically it all comes down to what you want from your bike. If you’re looking for comfort, go with the [easyazon_link identifier=”B07BDPDZWD” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Sunny Fitness Semi-Recumbent Bike[/easyazon_link]. It’s a comfy workout though not great for serious fitness enthusiasts. For people wanting a great bike that they can really push their fitness with, the [easyazon_link identifier=”B00KVZM2HS” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Schwinn Airdyne AD2[/easyazon_link] is the outright winner here. For those not wanting to spend much, take the [easyazon_link identifier=”B002KV383S” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Marcy ME-708[/easyazon_link], it’s basic yet reliable.

Recumbent exercise bikes are becoming a more common sight in gyms everywhere. These bikes offer a nice, big seat which is a lot more comfortable than a saddle. The reason we don’t have a budget pick on this selection is that the [easyazon_link identifier=”B005OU4E1M” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]900XL[/easyazon_link] doubles up as the top choice AND the budget choice. It doesn’t have a massive range of extras but it is reliable and has plenty of comfort and basic functionality. Weighing only 63 lbs and having transport wheels attached make it easy to move around. The pedals are also well designed, being a good size, and made to be grippy with effective foot straps.

Benefits

Comfortable

This is a very comfortable bike, having a big enough footprint to accommodate users up to 6’3” and down to 5’3”, making it fine for most people. The pedals are modeled on actual bike pedals, having the same rubbery textured design. You can actually replace them with regular pedals if needed, though the standard ones come with good secure straps. The seat is big and has a slightly bucketed design. The back is strong and gives good support. Some users do like to use a thin gel cushion on the seat.

Durable

Exerpeutic offers this model with a 3-year warranty on the frame and 90 days on parts. The frame warranty probably won’t be needed because this has a solid design. The parts should also be fine past 90 days, as expected from a big purchase. This frame is also able to support up to 300lbs in weight without being affected. Despite the parts warranty being low, most users go through years of use without ever having problems.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B005OU4E1M” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51tn22zADML.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Cheap

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B005OU4E1M” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]900XL[/easyazon_link] is one of the cheaper options when looking at recumbent bikes. It definitely qualifies as a budget/entry-level pick.

Easy to Use

Because there aren’t any real bells and whistles on this model, it’s also easy to use – even for first-timers. It’s as straightforward as jumping on, setting a resistance, and pedaling. There is a monitor attached although it’s quite a basic one. It displays the basics such as time, speed, and calories burned.

Quiet

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B005OU4E1M” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Exerpeutic 900XL Recumbent Bike[/easyazon_link] uses a magnetic resistance system. This type of system uses a magnetic flywheel which can change resistance with a simple level or dial adjustment. Turning it up or down is smooth and quiet. This bike also stays pretty quiet while pedaling, and you can get a pretty intense workout without causing much vibration or noise. The stabilizing legs also help for any really intense sessions, but for most people, they aren’t even needed. It’s so quiet in operation that you could easily read a book during a calm session.

Drawbacks

No Pre-Programmed Workouts

One of the biggest setbacks for this model is the lack of pre-programmed workouts. Without these, you need to know a little about biking sessions if you want to get any real benefit from using the machine. It can also leave you with a lack of variety if you aren’t inspired enough to design different workouts. You can get around this by using video workouts and trying to match the intensity. That is inconvenient for many people, especially on a bike with no tablet holder.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B005OU4E1M” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/411E8rLD5cL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Limited Settings

The resistance on a [easyazon_link identifier=”B005OU4E1M” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]900XL Bike[/easyazon_link] only switches between 8 different settings. The first setting is incredibly easy, while the highest is pretty tough, and the variation in between can be quite a jump. You have to switch resistance manually as well, which isn’t difficult to be honest. The lack of variation here and a basic display might limit how creative you can get with your training.

Long Assembly Time

The bike needs to be assembled when it arrives, although some vendors to offer it partly constructed. Generally, the bike will take you around 60-90 minutes to assemble from the box. Having a friend help can make things easier, and might also make it less boring.

Best for Advanced Users – Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike

Schwinn is a bike manufacturer with its roots in the late 1800s when it originally launched as a bicycle manufacturer. From there they went on to specialize in race bikes and eventually moved into exercise equipment as well. The [easyazon_link identifier=”B01MS7EWR9″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Schwinn 270[/easyazon_link] is one of their top models, offering a variety of extras alongside a comfortable ride. It can handle users up to 300lbs in weight and is best for users between 5’2” and 6’ tall.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B01MS7EWR9″ locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51ZpX3WKjyL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Benefits

Comfortable

This is a comfortable recumbent bike with a well-supported and well-padded seat. The seat is similar to a chair, giving good lumbar support. The seat also has s ventilated design to help keep you cool during workouts. Pedals are also comfortable to use, as are the handles (with built-in heart rate sensors).

Reliable

The bike comes with a great warranty. It may only cover 90 days for labor, but this should be minor compared to the massive warranties on electrics (1 year), mechanicals (2 years), and frame (10 years). If something goes wrong with minor parts, customer service tends to be quite helpful. There are plenty of people who’ve had minor parts shipped to them, allowing for a quick, free repair. The [easyazon_link identifier=”B01MS7EWR9″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Schwinn 270[/easyazon_link] holds up well over time too.

Plenty of Variety

Firstly this has 25 resistance levels to switch between, so you get plenty of choices. Then there’s also the 29 workout programs which are included, including heart-rate based workouts which are customized for your fitness level. These are a great way to keep pushing yourself and bring continuous development.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B01MS7EWR9″ locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51x5q6YtfOL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Memory & Data Tracking

[easyazon_link identifier=”B01MS7EWR9″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Schwinn’s 270 Recumbent Bike[/easyazon_link] can store certain statistics in the internal memory. There are four profile slots too, so multiple people can track their data.

Great Extras

By using the USB connectivity, you can download performance data and keep track of even more statistics. The USB port can also be used as a charger for your e-devices, and there’s also a storage tray and water bottle holder included. The final touch is a 3-speed fan that is built into the bike. It’s a great way to keep cool!

Drawbacks

Not Great for Tall Users

Probably the only real drawback of this bike is that it’s quite limited for tall users. Those over 6’ often report it being a little uncomfortable, and 6’ isn’t a gigantic size. Outside of this, there aren’t any real drawbacks. The fact that this limitation hits a large number of people is what knocks it off top spot though.

Best for Seniors & Comfort – Exerpeutic 4000 Recumbent Bike

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B00EKCCJLM” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Exerpeutic 4000[/easyazon_link] is another great creation from Schwinn. This model comes with more of a focus on comfort at the expense of variety. It is one of the most comfortable recumbents on the market. This bike comes in at the mid-range for the price, and also features Bluetooth connectivity. Able to handle up to 325 lbs of weight, this is a strong and sturdy machine.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B00EKCCJLM” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51Lo3rUWO5L.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Benefits

Extremely Comfortable

The seat on this bike is extremely thick and padded. It sits a little higher than most recumbents and also comes with a padded arm-rest on each side. This model is so comfortable you can sit in it for hours without any negative effects. The seat is described as being “air soft”, meaning it’s both thick and ventilated at the same time, allowing enough airflow to help you keep cool and to prevent your seat becoming full of sweat.

Quiet

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B00EKCCJLM” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Exerpeutic 4000[/easyazon_link] operates smoothly as a bike. It uses magnetic resistance so any adjustments are smooth and easy to make. There’s hardly any vibration or noise when using the bike, making it ideal for apartments or home use.

Variety of Workouts

This model comes with 12 different pre-programmed workouts and a few heart-rate based sessions too, which adapt to your fitness and provide a custom workout for you. Using the heart-rate sessions is a great way to keep your fitness progressing, while the standard sessions can be a good way to track that progress

Easy to Use

Like most Exerpeutic bikes, this one is easy to get started with. There are plenty of options to keep you coming back, yet the bike is still very much one you can just plug in and jump on.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B00EKCCJLM” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/518ywUGV8lL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Drawbacks

Long Assembly Time

Building an [easyazon_link identifier=”B00EKCCJLM” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Exerpeutic 4000 Recumbent Bike[/easyazon_link] takes up to 2 hours to do, and is easier with a friend helping. Regardless of the help though, you won’t be getting through this one quickly. Building it in an hour or less is the kind of task that takes plenty of experience with fitness equipment and a great toolkit.

Some Users Don’t Like the Look

Some users aren’t keen on the look of this machine, especially because it varies from the traditional recumbent bike design. The orange coloring on the seat could clash with your décor and mean the bike stands out quite a lot.

Final Word – Top Rated Recumbent Exercise Bike

All three of these bikes are great. The one which is best for you depends on your personal needs. For most people, the [easyazon_link identifier=”B005OU4E1M” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]900XL[/easyazon_link] is the one to go with. Having said that, advanced users or delicate ones would be better served by one of the other bikes.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B005OU4E1M” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51tn22zADML.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Buying an exercise bike is a great way of helping you to stay in shape through the winter months. Let’s face it, when it’s cold and wet outside you don’t want to be running, cycling, or even heading to the gym. Fortunately with the [easyazon_link identifier=”B002CVU2HG” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Sunny Health & Fitness SF-B111OS[/easyazon_link] you don’t need to. In my opinion, this is the best exercise bike under 500 for exercising.

Exercise bikes offer a huge array of benefits, from improving your cardio, building strength in your lower body, and even helping with weight loss. It’s also good on your joints and very convenient. You simply need to choose whether you prefer the recumbent style or the upright exercise bike.

But the real reason that the Sunny Health & Fitness SF-B111OS is the best exercise bike under 500 is the fact that it is fully adjustable and offers many of the features that you normally only get with the more expensive models.

I’ve tried every exercise bike I could get my hands on for under 500 and am convinced the Sunny Health & Fitness SF-B111OS is the best of them all.

Best exercise bike under 500

Sunny Health & Fitness SF-B111OS – Best For Exercising

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B00467H5YW” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41Sky%2B6g7HL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Sunny Health & Fitness have been in business for over 15 years and pride themselves on offering the best bikes and elliptical trainers for reasonable prices. The [easyazon_link identifier=”B002CVU2HG” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Sunny Health & Fitness SF-B111OS[/easyazon_link], also known as the Indoor cycling bike; doesn’t disappoint.

It’s a great option for anyone who loves cycling as it offers an experience very close to riding on the road.

44lb inertia driven flywheel

Easy Dial Tension Adjustment

Fully Adjustable

Chain Driven

Supports 265 pounds

Weighs 106 pounds

47” x 21” x 48”

Advantages

Fully Adjustable

When you’re used to be in the saddle for an extended period of time you need to be comfortable. This is easy to achieve on the [easyazon_link identifier=”B002CVU2HG” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]SF-B111OS[/easyazon_link] as it is fully adjustable.

The seat can be moved both up and down as well as back and forth; ensuring you can get the right position for your ride. The seat is also cushioned for comfort. More impressive is the fact that the handlebars move up and down and forward and back; there is absolutely no reason not to get comfortable on this bike.

Resistance Settings

The resistance on the [easyazon_link identifier=”B00467H5YW” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]SF-B111OS[/easyazon_link] is easily adjusted via a knob just below the handlebars. All you need to do is twist it to either increase or decrease the intensity of your workout.

But that’s not all! There is also a fabric brake pad that is operated by a separate lever near the handlebars. This allows you to fine-tune the resistance on your bike; creating realistic ups and downs which match those you would find if cycling on the road.

Bike Like Experience

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B002CVU2HG” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]SF-B111OS[/easyazon_link] uses a chain to drive the 44 pound flywheel. It is also exceptionally stable, allowing you to stand up while riding. Both of these factors help the bike to feel more like a road bike than an exercise bike. This can make your workout more challenging, exciting, and rewarding.

Portability

A great feature of this bike which is often overlooked by manufacturers is the addition of wheels on the front bar. All you need to do is release the brake, grasp the handlebars and pull downwards. The bike will pivot onto the transportation wheels allowing you to slide it away virtually effortlessly.

That’s a great way of keeping the space free.

Disadvantages

Unfortunately, even the best exercise bike under 500 is not perfect; there are a couple of small issues:

Volume

The bike is actually pretty quiet when riding; unless you want to crank the resistance up. This is particularly an issue if you’re using the felt brake as it creates a drumming sound.

If you’re hoping to ride while watching television or with others in the room; this could be an issue. However, if you’re planning on using it in a separate room with headphones and a music player or tablet then you probably won’t even notice the noise.

Customer Service

Several customers have commented on the slow response by the customer service team at Sunny Health & Fitness. This is disappointing considering the company is dedicated to giving the best possible experience.

Recumbent exercise bikes are a great way to keep exercising while recovering from a back injury or even living with back pains. They are low impact and will still provide the same cardio benefits as an upright bike. Of course, you won’t have quite the same feeling of being on the road.

Exerpeutic is actually a product of Paradigm Health & Wellness. They are considered one of the leading suppliers of fitness equipment in California. Their aim is to provide unique products through leading brands; the testimonies from their happy customers speak for themselves.

34” x 22” x 54”

Weight 63 pounds

Supports 300 pounds

V-Belt Drive

8 Resistance Levels

Transport Wheels

Large Pedals

Advantages

Features

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B00I1S0GEI” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Exerpeutic 1000 High Capacity recumbent[/easyazon_link] has a V-belt drive with balanced flywheel. This ensures the bike is smooth to ride and virtually silent. That’s impressive for a bike under 500.

In addition, there is a built-in screen that shows your current speed, distance completed, calories burned, time working out, and most impressive of all; your heart rate. The heart rate monitor is built into the grips; allowing you to check and monitor it whenever you want.

Step-Through Design

Recumbent bikes are generally considered the best option if you have a bad back or joint pain. For this reason, the [easyazon_link identifier=”B00I1S0GEI” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Exerpeutic 1000 High Capacity recumbent[/easyazon_link] has a step-through design; making it easy for anyone to get on and off.

You’ll also appreciate the extended leg stabilizers and large pedal design; helping you to pedal without your feet slipping.

This helps to lower the center of gravity and keep the bike stable when you’re pedaling.

Comfort

The seat on this bike is well padded to ensure you remain comfortable while pedaling. It can be adjusted back and forth.

It is worth noting that the backrest doesn’t move; this shouldn’t be an issue but could affect your comfort levels.

Disadvantages

Resistance Levels

Overall the [easyazon_link identifier=”B00I1S0GEI” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Exerpeutic 1000[/easyazon_link] is a well thought out bike. This is why it is disappointing to note that there are only 8 resistance levels. This is acceptable for a beginner but if you have any experience on a bike you’ll probably find that there are not enough settings to give you the workout you really want.

It’s also disappointing to note that despite having an electronic display the resistance needs to be adjusted manually via the knob. It’s not easy to do while cycling.

BladeZ Fitness Fusion GS II – Best For Spinning

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B015P8FANI” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51CgYb2NlzL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”471″]

View on Amazon

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B015P8FANI” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]BladeZ Fitness Fusion GS II[/easyazon_link] is a beautiful looking bike with a lot of great features. Unfortunately it doesn’t offer the same feel of being on the road as the Sunny Health & Fitness SF-B1110S.

BladeZ Fitness is actually a European company that has been producing exercise and fitness equipment for over 100 years! Their aim is to produce high-end equipment for the home and light commercial settings but at affordable prices; they’ve certainly hit the right note with this entry to the best exercise bike under 500.

Fully Adjustable

LCD Display

Sport Seat

Steel Frame

Supports 275 pounds

5” x 20” x 43”

Weighs 85 pounds

Advantages

Quality Build

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B015P8FANI” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]BladeZ Fitness Fusion[/easyazon_link] is made from heavy-duty steel. This does make it heavier to move around but it ensures it remains stable even in the most energetic of spinning classes. The current version of this bike features an improved handlebar post and handlebars; this ensures they are strong enough to take a heavy-duty workout.

There is a 40-pound flywheel to give you enough resistance while keeping the bike feeling smooth and stable. As a bonus, the bike comes with a comprehensive warranty.

Adjustability

The first thing you’ll notice is that the seat adjusts in 4 different directions and the handlebars also move. This will virtually guarantee your ability to get comfortable while riding it.

But that’s not all. The [easyazon_link identifier=”B015P8FANI” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]BladeZ Fitness Fusion[/easyazon_link] also has a variety of different hand position options; thanks to the extended length and shape of the handlebars. This is so that you can change your grip as necessary to match your spinning workout.

You’ll probably also notice the seat is thin and long; similar to a road bike. It is actually surprisingly comfortable.

Resistance

You do get a manual adjusting knob for the resistance levels on this bike. However, this is an infinite resistance style adjuster. You can keep turning it to make it harder and harder, (or easier). It’s easy to do this while riding and you can push the knob in to release all tension; effectively creating an emergency stop feature.

Features

The LCD console sits above the handlebars, ensuring you can see it at all times without it getting in the way. You have the usual display options, distance, calories burned, speed, time, and a scan feature. It doesn’t monitor your heart rate.

Disadvantages

No Workout Programs

This is a well put together bike with an electronic console and yet there are no workout programs to help you make the most of each session. This may not be a deal-breaker but it is certainly disappointing.

Size Limits

Several people have noted that if you are less than 5’2” you’re likely to struggle to reach the pedals, handlebars, and controls; despite the array of the handlebar and seat adjustments possible.

Comfort

Finally, while most people are happy with the seat anyone who is not accustomed to hard riding is likely to find it uncomfortable; which could prevent you from completing the whole workout.
