Sometimes exercise equipment is confusing. Many people are unsure of what piece is best for them. Today we look at the exercise bike vs treadmill. For most users, I’d recommend the treadmill. It’s been the most useful cardio equipment over my years of competing. The bike is better for those with joint problems, or training specifically to target the legs or for biking events. Outside of that, I’d almost always recommend the treadmill. Also for more details on exercise bikes, take a look at our comparison of exercise and spin bikes.

Treadmills

Treadmills have been around for centuries and are still a firm favorite in gyms. They give consistent results and work for almost everybody. Because of this, almost every gym-goer has used one at some time.

Treadmill Benefits

Improvements for All Levels

A lot of people believe running on a treadmill is easier than running outdoors. While this can be true, it doesn’t have to be. Setting the incline to 1% is enough to make a treadmill running equally difficult to outdoor running.

Also, having an easier run at 0% incline is a good option for some people. Those who are not yet fit enough to handle outdoor runs can have an easier time starting off on a treadmill. Likewise, advanced runners can up the difficulty by increasing the incline. There are all kinds of possibilities. Using a treadmill basically has benefits for everybody.

Specific Improvements

Working on a treadmill will give you the exact workout you’re looking for. There’s no drop/increase in speed in which you could get on a bike because the belt forces you to move with it.

This type of consistency in regards to speed/incline is great for being precise with workouts. You can track results more accurately and you know that you’re pushing hard enough to get the improvements you want.

Another small benefit that comes from this is always knowing your exact speed/incline. Bikes can vary a bit as the speed goes up/down and you try to keep it steady. With a treadmill, it’s already steady, you just need to keep up!

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”466″ identifier=”B0193V3DJ6″ locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41Kif2i%2B41L.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Builds Joint Strength & Impact Resistance

Your joints will thank you for using a good treadmill, such as the [easyazon_link identifier=”B006JKUV54″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]True Performance 300[/easyazon_link] because this type of equipment comes with cushioning systems built into the deck. That means the impact on your joints is reduced when you land, so less wear and tear accumulates over time.

Versatility

A good, versatile treadmill allows you to do all kinds of workouts. Take the Cybex 750T for example. It has a huge speed range, a good amount of incline available, and can even do a negative incline. This means you can work on all kinds of slopes, and the speed adjustment lets you change between walking, jogging, or running. Anything from hill sprints to multi-hour hikes is possible on these machines.

Entertaining

Modern treadmills almost all come with at least an aux socket, so you can plug some headphones in and listen to music. Some also come with the ability to stream music or listen to the radio. High-end models like the NordicTrack C990 even have a tablet holder or TV screen with the ability to watch live, stream, or watch vids from external storage. All of this combines to give you a great amount to do whilst running.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B072R2T7K5″ locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51DTY3SVt3L.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Helpful Features

Some treadmills have certain features to make them more user-friendly. These include cup holders, towel holders, safety clips, and heart monitors. There are even some models that come with a fan fitted to help keep you cool!

Treadmill Drawbacks

Poor for Joint Agility & Stability

A treadmill has a very flat surface, which isn’t really compared to the outdoors. Outside there are all kinds of variations in the ground, some parts are sloped or uneven, different levels of hardness, plus you need to take turns to keep going outdoors – you can’t go in a straight line forever!

This uneven ground, turning and changes in the surface all help to build agility and mobility within the joints. It also strengthens the small supporting muscles around your feet and joints, which give you extra stability and performance once they are properly developed.

Using a treadmill limits all of these because its a straight line, perfectly flat design.

Bad for Injured/Unstable Joints

While your joints are saved from a lot of the impact when using a treadmill, there is still more impact than on a bike. This is because you are still running and your body weight is still slamming down onto your leg & foot with every step. For anybody working on rehab with a weak or injured joint, this is bad. It also limits how often the treadmill can be used by people with pre-existing joint issues.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”492″ identifier=”B00YG0JV96″ locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41acYnXxNIL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Doesn’t Work for All Muscle Groups

Running involves many muscle groups, including the core and upper body. Running on a treadmill lightens the load on some body parts. The main one is the hamstrings. Because the belt is moving by itself, you use a bit less energy to push off it compared to when you propel yourself off the ground outdoors. This reduces the load on your hamstrings in particular.

It’s also easier to slack off with your core & upper body, creating bad form and relying on the treadmill itself for support sometimes. All of this is bad for your general development and should be avoided.

Safety

While safety can be a plus, with emergency shut-off features and control over settings, it can still be a problem sometimes. This is during high-intensity workouts when you are struggling to keep up and really pushing. Once you cross the threshold and can no longer match the pace, it could cause an injury or other problem. Emergency shut-offs only usually work as you are coming off the treadmill anyway. Even turning the speed down is a gradual process, so it’s always possible that you’ll end up having to jump off yourself in an emergency.

Exercise Bike

Stationary bikes are also very popular, much like treadmills. They offer a lot of comfort and variation when exercising. Being able to adjust the resistance is how you increase/decrease workload, and some bikes, like the [easyazon_link identifier=”B0798DH9D9″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Pro Indoor Cycle Trainer[/easyazon_link], have enough settings to give a varied workout all around. Keep in mind we’re looking at stationary bikes here, though we have already done a previous comparison of outdoor cycling vs treadmill use

Exercise Bike Benefits

Very Safe to Use

Stationary bikes are one of the safest pieces of exercise equipment. As long as your position is set properly, there is very little risk. You are in full control of the pedals so if you stop, they stop, unlike a treadmill that keeps ongoing.

Low Cost

The cost of a decent stationary bike is lower than most pieces of equipment. Consider the [easyazon_link identifier=”B079FLSG81″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Bellar Sports Spin Bike[/easyazon_link], it’s cheaper than all but the most basic of treadmills and still has a good amount of features.

Easy to Store & Use

Bikes are usually a lot smaller and lighter than treadmills too. This means it doesn’t take up as much ground space and is also a lot easier to move around or store. Home users will find this most appealing. Having one available in your own home is a great help when trying to improve fitness.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B014VX254A” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41DKr6l6KHL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Variety of Workouts

A high-level bike, like the BIKE, will have enough different settings and features to give you a very varied workout. The way a bike does this is by adjusting the resistance, and sometimes also by asking you to keep the bike in a set RPM range. RPM is Revolutions Per Minute, basically, it refers to how fast you are pedaling. Raising and lowering resistance can mimic hills and other tough sections, as well as just making a regular workout tougher. The RPM is raised or lowered sometimes instead of changing the resistance.

No Impact

While a treadmill can be gentler on joints thanks to cushioning, a bike puts almost no strain at all on your joints. For people with previous injuries, this is excellent news. There is no impact whatsoever and the circular motion of pedaling is natural and gentle on the legs. The only area which still gets some wear is the knees, but the lack of impact helps them a lot.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B002KV1MJU” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41qvpFYuMdL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Drawbacks of Exercise Bikes

Fewer Calories Burned

When you use [easyazon_link identifier=”B002JB40MC” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]a stationary bike[/easyazon_link], there is less energy being burned by your body. This is because you are sat down and your legs are doing almost all of the work. The upper body is just there to help you hold your position. Compare that to running where your upper body & core are constantly stabilizing and moving with you to generate momentum. Obviously, the treadmill gives a bigger workload, which means it burns more calories too.

Limited Amount of Realism

Unlike the treadmill, a stationary bike can’t really be adjusted to match the outdoor experience. The incline doesn’t change at all so you’re always pedaling on the flat, and there is no unevenness anywhere. Granted, the treadmill stays quite flat too, but changing incline/decline really helps with that. A bike doesn’t have those features, so it can’t try to emulate real-world cycling, despite some great programs being available.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B07C6R4NGC” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/510CPvoCc1L.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]

Possible to Get Lazy

With a bike, you can ease up on how fast you pedal when tired, which means you might not be working as hard as you wanted to. Then there’s also resistance. Some bikes have numbered resistances, which is great for tracking where you’re at. Others use a dial/knob turning system, which has no marks or measurements, so it can be difficult to know if your resistance is the same as before or higher/lower.

Exercise Bike vs Treadmill

For most users, I would recommend the treadmill. This is because it gives more overall development. It works your core and even the upper body, plus your joints are going to be strengthened as well. There’s a lot of potential for advanced training too. You get this potential because of variable settings & workouts, plus the possibility to go at high speed/inclines.

A bike is recommended for people who are specifically training to ride, or looking for more focused leg development. Some bikes still have plenty of top-end potentials as well, so it’s still useful at high levels. You might also be trying to protect your joints by doing very low-impact work. The bike would be better in that case too.

Decisions, decisions, decisions. We get bombarded with thousands of them every day; some monumental and life-altering But some are also inconsequential and trivial. Most fall somewhere in between. For example, you need to buy some exercise equipment for the house. What would you go with between a spin bike vs. treadmill?

For me, I say [easyazon_link identifier=”B00JVGNYWK” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]treadmill[/easyazon_link] all the way. When I work out, I need to focus. I need to be able to put my mind somewhere else, so it doesn’t think about the sweat dripping off my face or the soreness developing in my leg muscles.

But when I sit on one of those tiny little seats that [easyazon_link identifier=”B002CVU2HG” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]spin bikes[/easyazon_link] come with, I can’t do it. All I can do is think about how much it hurts to sit down for more than a couple of seconds. Those thoughts quickly turn to the burn in my calves and the crick in my back.

Treadmills aren’t perfect either, but I find it far easier to focus on one of them.

But to be fair, let’s examine both and see how the general benefits and drawbacks pan out.

Spin Bike vs. Treadmill

View on Amazon

Spin Bike vs. Treadmill: Similar But Different

Before dissecting the two, it is worth noting that they do have several things in common:

[easyazon_link identifier=”B01D5C44R4″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Treadmills[/easyazon_link] and spin bikes are designed to do essentially the same thing—help you get in better physical shape indoors. This means they are safer, more convenient, and efficient than a gym membership or exercising outside, and

You don’t have to worry about the weather, slipping and falling, twisting an ankle on the sidewalk, a tree root or a rock, or getting hit by a car.

If they are set up at home—well, you can’t get much more convenient than that. Nothing makes it easier to skip a workout than having to drive somewhere to do it.

With a machine at home, you don’t waste time driving to the gym or track or waiting for a machine to free up.

You set the pace and intensity of your workout which makes either suitable for all fitness levels.

Similarities

Most treadmills and [easyazon_link identifier=”B00GQ9ZR7U” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]spin bikes[/easyazon_link] will come with preset workout and controls that allow you to make a workout as easy or as tough as you’d like. This also means the number of calories you burn is up to you. You just have to use a program and intensity that challenges you.

If you like to see just how many miles you covered or how many calories you burned, the digital readouts on most models of either will be happy to tell you!

Both can be costly. There are more affordable variations of both, but then you risk losing quality when you spend less on a machine, which leads to another common issue…

Maintenance: Nothing is more annoying than getting ready for your workout only to find your machine broken. At the gym, management has to get broken treadmills and spin bikes fixed while you switch to another machine. At home, it’s up to you.

The Breakdown- the Pros

Improve Your Form

As cray, as it may sound, running on a treadmill, is a great way to examine your running form and figure out how to improve upon it. Back in the ’90s, some researchers discovered that people running on treadmills tend to have a smaller stride length and an increase in stride-frequency.

This can occur because of the feeling of instability that often comes with running on a [easyazon_link identifier=”B00Z9HAYIM” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]treadmill[/easyazon_link]. But while that may sound bad, researchers say it gives runners a chance to improve your form while reducing the impact that running has on the body.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”450″ identifier=”B01D5C44R4″ locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41l-JZ0khZL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”450″]View on Amazon

Easy To Use

Does it get much easier than stepping on the treadmill, setting your desired speed, and running? Probably not. There can be more to it than that as well. But in essence, all you have to do is get on a treadmill and start moving your legs.

Spin Bike vs. Treadmill

Less Wear And Tear

Many treadmills are designed to have a little give in the tracks, so it doesn’t feel like you are running on the road or a sidewalk. Some try to incorporate special shock-absorbing technology or cushioning to reduce the impact that running has on your body.

Running on hard surfaces like the road can result in your joints being forced to absorb a lot of force with each stride. If you are larger than the average-sized person, this impact is even more brutal. Nothing kills a workout routine faster than pain emanating from your knees.

You’re also a lot less likely to turn your ankle since you will not have anything in your path you can trip over when you run on an [easyazon_link identifier=”B00JVGNYQ6″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]treadmill[/easyazon_link].

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B00JVGNYQ6″ locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41HlIxuSUxL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”457″]View on Amazon

The Breakdown- the Cons

The Mental Challenge

Let’s be real—running is boring. All you do is get on a [easyazon_link identifier=”B00IOF1LTW” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]treadmill[/easyazon_link] and run. You don’t catch anything, kick anything, or—well, do anything for 20-30 minutes (or longer). Some may consider that a benefit; because challenges are things we like to overcome. But the exercise itself is challenging enough. Do we really need a mental challenge at the same time as a physical one?

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B00JVGNYY8″ locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41fr7hU5IgL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”480″]View on Amazon

Biomechanics

[easyazon_link identifier=”B00YG0JV96″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Treadmills[/easyazon_link] are great for controlling your environment. But if you are training for something, they can hurt as well as help. Yes, you reduce the risk of tripping over random things and eliminate weather as a factor. But some elements, or wind at least, can be good. Wind can increase your workload by as much as ten percent.

It’s also not unusual to see treadmill runners favor one leg over another, lean forward less (which can result in wasted energy), and posture can be impacted.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”384″ identifier=”B00YG0JVOG” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/414mukBzXIL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Loss Of Ancillary Benefits

Running outside and dealing with changing surface areas, obstructions, elevations, etc. can be very annoying, and something [easyazon_link identifier=”B078HSYDCP” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]treadmill[/easyazon_link] runners do not have to deal with inside. But doing so improves your proprioception (ability to sense where your body in relation to your surroundings).

Running over different surfaces outside helps your body (the brain, muscles, joints, etc.) get coordinated. You can’t get that on a treadmill.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B01M0XSDWI” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41C2H–RN8L.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]

The Spin Bike

Pros

Low impact

Low risk of injury

Can be easier to get started exercising

Cons

Uncomfortable

Stationary platform

More challenging to set up

The Breakdown- the Pros

Low Impact

Unlike a treadmill, your body weight is not pounding down on your joint with every pedal because of the relatively low impact nature of spinning. This makes it easier for anyone regardless of age or body type to enjoy exercising using a spin bike.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B00XMHI7LC” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51ww6145rnL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Low risk of injury

The low impact nature of [easyazon_link identifier=”B07B47NTWB” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]spin bikes[/easyazon_link] helps lower the risk of injury. But along with strengthening your muscles, it helps strengthen the joints in your knees and hips. This can, in turn, help prevent muscles from getting overextended. With stronger joints and muscles, you’ll be less likely to sprain or tear anything.

Adjusting the height of the seat and handlebars can also take any undue stress and pressure off your back and shoulders.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B07BNKH1X3″ locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/511ZzAc-WFL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Can be easier to get started exercising

This will not apply to those who are already fit. But for the overweight crowd, it can be easier to get started exercising riding a bike relative to a treadmill. [easyazon_link identifier=”B01G7KAK9M” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Spinning[/easyazon_link] is not a weight-bearing exercise. Yes, there are times during programs that you are told to stand and peddle.

But you can always sit down if you need to.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B00467H5YW” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/414P7b4lFFL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]

The Breakdown- the Cons

Uncomfortable

No one is going to deny it. The seats on those [easyazon_link identifier=”B076TZZRC6″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]spin bikes[/easyazon_link] are about as uncomfortable as a seat can get. They are small for the in-shape crowd. But if you are out of shape it’s even worse. Some folks will try to tell you that it is not that bad, or you get used to it. Those folks are not telling the truth; either that or they have no feeling in their posterior.

You can get special biker shorts with a built-in cushion. But they are not cheap, you can’t wear them anywhere other than on your bike (because you’ll look ridiculous), and the cushion is going to flatten out pretty quickly.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B0744HQ9XD” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/510CPvoCc1L.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Stationary Platform

When you ride a bike outdoors you get more than just exercise. You work on your sense of balance, coordination, and reflexes. Balance is something that is a part of riding a bike. Coordination and reflexes help you pedal and avoid bumps and other obstacles. But since your spin bike is secured and stationary, you do not get to reap those rewards.

At the same time, if you are uncoordinated and have terrible balance, the stationary nature of a [easyazon_link identifier=”B077GRGDWT” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]spin bike[/easyazon_link] is a good thing.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B002CVU2HG” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41Su7BpR0QL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]

More challenging to set up

[easyazon_link identifier=”B06XPWHHHD” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Spin bikes[/easyazon_link] are not light. They will come with a number of parts that will have to be connected properly for the bike to function as it should. You may need to play with the tension adjustment and the brakes to keep your bike from squeaking.

Since they are kind of heavy, you may want to put it together where it is going to remain. It will become even more awkward to move after you put it together.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B007595TKU” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41copX1fBwL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

The Bottom Line – Spin Bike vs. Treadmill

When it comes down to it, you can get great exercise on either one. If you are worried about the impact on a [easyazon_link identifier=”B078J3KZWG” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]treadmill[/easyazon_link], walk at an incline. Walking has minimal impact, but the incline will increase the difficulty level.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”475″ identifier=”B00JVGNYY8″ locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41BIucOwSRL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Both are great for exercise, but if you’re looking to do something at home, go with the treadmill. [easyazon_link identifier=”B0172EEHXC” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Spin bikes[/easyazon_link] are simply way too uncomfortable. Besides, spinning is done best at the gym with a class. That way you get the added benefit of an instructor, the music, and your “spin class” community.

At home, it is just you, your cats, and your neighbor screaming at you to turn your music down.

We all know that riding bike is an excellent form of exercise. Yeah, we did it because it was something fun to do with our friends as kids. But in the process, it kept us from becoming the ‘husky’ kid in class. However, while we can’t be the husky kid in class, we can still be the office ‘big’ guy. Today we are solving the dilemma between spin bike vs exercise bike.

That is unless we find a way to keep the pounds off as adults—you know, like by riding an [easyazon_link identifier=”B007595TKU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]exercise bike[/easyazon_link]. But the question we all need to answer is what kind of exercise bike do we want, between spin bike vs exercise bike? Do we want a spin bike, a traditional upright stationary bike, or a recumbent bike?

While there are good things about every type of exercise bike, for me, the answer is easy. I wouldn’t even consider using a traditional [easyazon_link identifier=”B01KAGX7DU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]upright stationary bike[/easyazon_link] or a [easyazon_link identifier=”B002CVU2HG” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]spin bike[/easyazon_link]. For a larger than average size person like myself, they are just way too uncomfortable.

If I’m buying a bike, there is no question of whether I’m getting a spin bike or an exercise bike. I’m getting a [easyazon_link identifier=”B01KAGX74E” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]recumbent[/easyazon_link] (exercise) bike. I’m kind of partial to the Star Trac models.

They are much more comfortable to use, and you can burn some calories while using it. You may not burn them as fast as you would on another bike. But at least you will not dread working out because of how uncomfortable the tiny seat on a spin or [easyazon_link identifier=”B002KV383S” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]upright bike[/easyazon_link] is.

But that’s just my opinion. For those who need a reason other than comfort, let’s dive a little deeper into our options.

Spin Bike vs Exercise Bike

Spin Bike vs Exercise Bike

There are essentially three different bikes to consider, a [easyazon_link identifier=”B0744HQ9XD” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]spin bike[/easyazon_link], a traditional [easyazon_link identifier=”B00KVZM2SC” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]upright bike[/easyazon_link], and a [easyazon_link identifier=”B005OU4E1M” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]recumbent bike[/easyazon_link]. For exercise purposes, they can all get the job done. But as anyone who has ever started and quite an exercise routine knows, like what you are doing or at least not hating what you are doing can be the difference-maker.

If you hate what you are doing, it is going to be super easy to quit. But if you like your exercise of choice, then your chances of success are that much higher.

Liking it would make it easier, but simply not hating it can be enough to keep you going. So, when it comes to cycling, choosing the right type of bike for you is critical.

And yes, they are different.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B00GQ9ZR7U” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51AOepSs00L.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Customer Reviews

Since we are looking more towards a type of bike rather than a specific brand or model, I’m not going to include customer reviews this time. Including them would not be of any use when deciding between the types of bikes.

This time, the review is not about a model used for exercise, but the style of bike used to get exercise.

Spin Bikes

Pros

More like an actual bike

Intense workouts

Cons

Uncomfortable

No preset workouts

The Breakdown— the pros

More like a real bike

If you are thinking you want to try an [easyazon_link identifier=”B002KV1MJU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]exercise bike[/easyazon_link] because you really enjoyed riding your bike as a kid, then the [easyazon_link identifier=”B06VW3HS2Q” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]spin bike[/easyazon_link] is the way to go (Star Trac makes some good ones). With the weighted flywheel and direct-contact brake system, it is going to ride more like any bike you had growing up than the other options.

However, if you try to add the streamers and a bell-like you had on your first bike, people might look at you funny.

When you are more familiar with something, it can be easier to get started and stay on track. Since it is more like your old bike than the other options, a spin bike might be the surest path to success.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B001W0F5ZC” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/412tzp4IL8L.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Intense workouts

If you are looking for the best possible workout, the [easyazon_link identifier=”B0756SBLKM” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]spin bike[/easyazon_link] is the one for you. It’s not that you can’t get a great workout on the others. But these are built with intense fat-burning and calorie burning in mind.

The ability to stand up and pedal harder certainly helps. But the most significant benefit in this regard is the prevalence of spin classes among gyms these days. With the right instructor, you can get a tremendous workout on a [easyazon_link identifier=”B00GQ9ZR7U” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]spin bike[/easyazon_link].

This, of course, doesn’t help you out if you are buying one of these for use at home. But I believe there are services online where you can view an instructor’s course. It’s not the same as being there, but it gets the job done.

However, the fast pace that is inherent with spin bikes can make it hard for novice riders to get started.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”320″ identifier=”B00UG9R7UG” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41B9ps7uBiL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”320″]View on Amazon

The Breakdown— the cons

Uncomfortable

Have you ever seen the size of the seats on one of these? Who behind actually fits on one? People that take the classes will probably say that you aren’t sitting very much if you are putting the work in like you should. But that’s just not realistic. It may be true for the fit, [easyazon_link identifier=”B01G7KAK9M” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]spin bike[/easyazon_link]-warriors types.

But if you are getting started and trying to lose weight, it just doesn’t work.

All the leaning over can be very hard for people with back issues. Spin bikes can also be hard on people having problems with joint discomfort.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B003TQ2O1U” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41l77cOug3L.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

No preset workouts

If you are a novice rider, then you may not be the most motivated to hop on a spin bike and go nuts. Chances are you are going to need a little direction. If you are attending a spin class at your local gym, you’ll get it. But if you are at home, you are going to be out of luck.

At home, the intensity and duration of your workout will be entirely up to you. Spin bikes do not come with preset programs you can use for guidance like with upright or recumbent bikes. You may be able to find some classes online.

But if you can’t set up your computer, phone, or tablet in the right position, this may not matter.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B002CVU2HG” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41Su7BpR0QL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Exercise Bikes

Upright

Pros

Convenience

Very easy to use

Cons

Awkward

Not very comfortable

The Breakdown—the pros

Convenience

Let’s face it. [easyazon_link identifier=”B014VX254A” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Upright bikes[/easyazon_link] do not take up a lot of space, and they are often lighter than the other options making it easier to put the bike away when it is not in use. Some may say ‘out of sight, out of mind’ but others will be happy to make better use of the space in their homes.

Since they know they bought the bike, chances are it is not going to be forgotten anytime soon.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B01KAGX7DU” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41P0wccHYML.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Very easy to use

Spin bikes can take some getting used to as can recumbent bikes. But [easyazon_link identifier=”B01N7PO9GV” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]upright bikes[/easyazon_link] are the easiest of the bunch to get started using. All you have to do is figure out the height you need the seat to be and how much resistance you want to use.

It doesn’t matter what your current fitness level is either. All you have to do is get on and ride!

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B002KV383S” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/31sVybjHGZL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”375″]View on Amazon

The Breakdown- the cons

Awkward

Leaning over to grab the handles can put some strain on the lower back and neck. Lean on them too much, and you risk causing some wrist pain as well. The high center of gravity with an [easyazon_link identifier=”B077GSJJ8D” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]upright bike[/easyazon_link] can also make it feel a little less stable than you may like.

You can ride while sitting up or bending over. But the position you often find yourself in can be unnatural and lead to fatigue easier.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B077GSJJ8D” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41fxkOaTrDL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]

Not very comfortable

Why do bike seats have to be so darn small? Maybe when we were kids, the size of the seat was just right. But as adults, these things are too small to be comfortable. While comfort is not the purpose of an [easyazon_link identifier=”B014VX254A” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]upright exercise bike[/easyazon_link], it sure helps to keep you coming back.

Who wants to exercise when you know your behind is going to be sore five minutes in and just get worse until you quit?

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B01N7PO9GV” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41W%2Bpn6LL4L.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Recumbent

Pros

Comfort

Less prone to injuries

Cons

Too comfortable?

Space eaters

The Breakdown— the pros

Comfort

How genius! A bike with a seat that people can sit in and not be dying to get five minutes later! If that wasn’t enough, many models of [easyazon_link identifier=”B005OU4E1M” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]recumbent bikes[/easyazon_link] come with contoured backrest, armrest to help alleviate any tension in your shoulders, and yes—even a personal fan.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B002KV1MJU” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41qvpFYuMdL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

It’s the ay cycling that was always meant to be.

Less prone to injuries

Cycling, in general, is a low-impact exercise, but with the reclined style of a [easyazon_link identifier=”B00KVZM2V4″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]recumbent bike[/easyazon_link], it is pretty minimal. As a result—you are less likely to suffer any undue aches or pains that could impact your commitment to working out (other than tired muscles because you had such a good workout).

Want to save your knees, back, and neck? Go with a recumbent bike.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B005OU4E1M” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51RXVmcGDXL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]

The Breakdown—the cons

Too comfortable?

It sounds crazy, but there is such a thing as too comfortable. If you are very comfortable, you may be less apt to push yourself on a [easyazon_link identifier=”B01IVNADOU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]recumbent bike[/easyazon_link], and will not work as hard as you need to in order to get a proper workout. If you are not getting a good workout, what’s the point in using it?

There isn’t one.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B01KAGX74E” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51LfmePxpML.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Space eaters

The biggest drawback to a [easyazon_link identifier=”B00EKCCJLM” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]recumbent bike[/easyazon_link] is the size. These things are big, they are going to take up a good amount of space, and they are not easy to move once you put it together. So, if you get one, make sure you put it together in the place you plan on having it for years to come.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B00KVZM2V4″ locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41CLSqWvfeL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]

The Bottom Line

If you want to read more about all three types, among spin bike vs exercise bike, you should check out our review of Star Trac recumbent bikes. My ‘Spin Bike vs. Treadmill’ article will give you some more insight to spin bikes as will this article.

When it comes down to it, you will be able to burn calories with any of the three bikes. But for me, I will not keep up an exercise routine if I hate it. I’ve tried spin class; the seat on the [easyazon_link identifier=”B06XRSZJS9″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]spin bike[/easyazon_link] was so incredibly uncomfortable I walked out five minutes after it started.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B00KVZM2V4″ locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51q%2BrXLaA8L.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

[easyazon_link identifier=”B002JB40MC” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Upright bikes[/easyazon_link] are fine for shorter rides but if you are planning to go for 30 minutes or more—watch out. If you are looking to lose weight, you’ll need to ride for longer.

If I’m going to buy an exercise bike for the house, I’m going with the one I am not going to hate using. I’m going with a [easyazon_link identifier=”B00AQP2RJG” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]recumbent bike[/easyazon_link].

The theory behind the [easyazon_link identifier=”B00972FVJC” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]cardio twister exercise machine[/easyazon_link] is that it twists your body as you complete the aerobic exercise. If you are just starting to exercise again then this is the machine for you! Today we present to you the Cardio Twister Exercise Machine Reviews.

The manufacturer claims that you can train your entire body with just this machine!

Before you purchase one you need to be aware that this is a good machine; it really can improve your fitness. But, there are certain issues that you should be aware of to ensure your machine lasts.

I’ve been fortunate enough to test this machine extensively for the last few months and am pleased with the results.

As you’ll see from the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01GU9B1W0″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]cardio twister exercise machine[/easyazon_link] reviews, this machine is proving popular. This is not surprising as it promises to train your stomach, shoulders, upper arms, back, butt, and even your legs.

It works on a similar basis to the step-up machines. Your legs will move up and down as though walking or running. It then adds in a handle that you hold and twist from side to side; moving the top half of your body away from the bottom.

The idea is that it increases the strain on your muscles; thereby improving your results.

In general, the feedback from customers has been very positive:

4 star rating from Walmart

2 star rating from Ebay users

3 stars from Lose Baby Weight users

This illustrates the fact that the machine is good but does have some drawbacks.

It is a worthwhile addition to your home, especially if you are limited on space or looking for something to do in front of the television.

Advantages

I have found the following benefits associated with this device and other cardio twister exercise machines appear to concur:

Light Weight

Space Saving

Variable Resistance Settings

Easy To Use – With DVD

Relatively Quiet

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B00972FVJC” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/31I48O6tzLL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”409″]View on Amazon

It’s Light Weight

The cardio twister exercise machine weighs just 16kg. This is heavy enough that you’re not going to want to move it all the time.

But it is light enough for you to be able to slide it out of its storage spot and into the room on a regular basis.

The machine is designed to take a maximum weight of 115kg. This equates to approximately 250 pounds so shouldn’t be an issue for most users.

Space Saving Format

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B01GU9B1W0″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]cardio twister exercise machine[/easyazon_link] is not the smallest piece of exercise equipment you can get, especially as it has the handles rising out of the base.

This certainly draws more attention to it which means you may wish to move it when your friends are visiting.

However, the base is approximately 2 ½ feet by 2 feet. The height of the handles is roughly 4 feet.

As far as most home gym equipment goes this is a small piece of kit; you can have it in virtually any room. The real benefit of this is that it is constantly visible; enticing you to use it more and see the weight come off.

It’s even possible to keep it fairly discretely at the side of a room and then just pull it out when you want to use it.

Of course, it is worth noting that you should allow a little extra space to ensure you don’t bash your walls or furniture when completing the twisting motion.

Variable Resistance Settings

Cardio Twister Exercise Machine Reviews

When you first start exercising it’s important to start at the bottom and build up your stamina and exercise abilities.

In fact, at the start creating a habit is more important than the actual exercise. This is part of the reason the cardio twister is so good. It is always there; making it easy to create a habit.

The machine has a display feature that allows you to see a surprising number of features:

Total yards / steps

Feet per minute or steps per minute

Training time per session and cumulative

Calories burned during your session

The screen automatically scrolls through these facts while you are training. You can also use the mode button to have the total steps shown at the top of the screen and the other information displayed at the bottom.

This can make it easier to read while exercising.

The resistance can be quickly and easily adjusted via a lever to increase the tension on the stepping mechanism. This will make it harder and more challenging to achieve the same number of steps as your last workout!

It is worth noting that I found the resistance change minimal when adjusted. As you get fitter you may feel it is not doing enough for you.

Easy To Use With DVD

Cardio Twister Exercise Machine Reviews

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B00972FVJC” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]cardio twister[/easyazon_link] actually comes with a DVD to illustrate how to use the machine. There are several different workout options and example warm-up and cooling down exercises.

This is a great benefit when you’ve never used a machine like this before. Although relatively simple it is reassuring to know the right way to warm up and cool down. This can help to prevent injuries which will damage your weight loss or fitness efforts.

The main advantage of the DVD is that you can play it while using the machine in your living room. Again, you’re not going to need much motivation to get going.

Along with the DVD you’ll also get a 10-day diet plan to help you achieve your weight loss goals faster. There is also a user manual should you wish to take a quick look and dive straight in.

Relatively Quiet

The manufacturer claims this is a quiet machine and, surprisingly, they are right. It is not silent but it is quiet enough to allow you to still watch television and hear what the people are saying.

That said, if you have a significant other in the room they may find the whirring noise distracting. But then they could also say that about your heavy breathing!

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B00972FVJC” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/31I48O6tzLL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”409″]View on Amazon

Disadvantages

As already noted, there are several drawbacks to the cardio twister. It is important to be aware of these before you purchase one:

Questionable Quality

Doesn’t Appear To Be Effective For All Of Your Body

Limited Workout Routines

Questionable Quality

This is a lightweight, fairly portable machine. Unfortunately, this means that the quality may not be as high as it could be.

While I did not experience any issues there are people who felt it was more of a toy than an exercise machine.

If you feel this then it is important to be aware that if you bought it from Amazon then it can only be returned to Germany!

One of the other main issues is the Z chain which it uses. Looking at the cardio twister exercise machine reviews several users have reported that this comes off on a regular basis. To avoid this happening it is essential that you keep it lubricated and adjust it according to the instructions in your manual.

Other issues relate to bolts snapping or coming off or the chain slipping. This emphasizes the importance of regularly maintaining your cardio twister.

It will only last if you look after it.

Effectiveness

Cardio Twister Exercise Machine Reviews

Adjusting the resistance on this machine makes very little difference to your workout. This is something that needs to be addressed.

In addition, despite the claims, the twisting motion has a limited effect on your core. This is because most of the strain will be taken by your shoulders and arms.

It will work on your core but slowly and you are unlikely to see a reduction at the rate you would like.

You will feel the burn in your legs; especially if you keep it up for the duration of your favorite television show!

This [easyazon_link identifier=”B00972FVJC” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]machine[/easyazon_link] will not turn you into an Olympic athlete but it will help you to improve your fitness and lose excess weight. Especially if you accompany it with a healthy eating plan.

Workout Routines

The DVD supplies several suggested workouts. These can help to make it more fun and challenging; especially when you purchase the machine.

Unfortunately, the hard fact is that the number of combinations is limited by the machine.

You are highly likely to find it boring or tedious after you have been working out for a week or two.

The TV may provide some distraction to help keep you motivated but a lack of variation is likely to make you want to quit. This will leave you with a nice clothes horse or an unusual ornament in the room.

To make it more fun you’re going to need to have a workout companion and set some competitions; this will also help you to get the mist from your workout.

Summing It Up – Cardio Twister Exercise Machine Reviews

If you look round you’ll be able to get the cardio twister exercise machine at a price just entering 3 figures.

This makes it an extremely attractive deal, especially if you haven’t exercised in a while.

In fact; this is the perfect target market for the cardio twister. It is easy enough to jump on and off that you’ll have no excuse for not exercising and it will help you to build a habit. We hope this Cardio Twister Exercise Machine Reviews helped you to make a more informed decision.

As your fitness improves you’ll be able to look at alternatives, such as a NordicTrack C990 treadmill.

Just remember, like all exercise equipment, you need to look after it to get the best from it. My recommendation is to the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01GU9B1W0″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]cardio twister exercise machine[/easyazon_link] is a great option when you’re ready to start improving your fitness. It is a great first stepping stone.

Exercise bikes are everywhere these days, and there are a variety of different types available too. With many people choosing a bike over a treadmill, today we’re going to look at the best exercise bike under 200. That limits the selection, but I’ve broken it down for you into a few different picks. That way if you have a preferred type of bike, you can give that type a look. Overall though my recommendation stays with the [easyazon_link identifier=”B007595TKU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Exerpeutic Folding Magnetic Upright Bike[/easyazon_link].

This is because the bike has the most versatility, comfort, reliability, and usability of the entire selection. The other choices are great IF you want that specific type of bike. They might even be better than the [easyazon_link identifier=”B007595TKU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Exerpeutic[/easyazon_link] in a couple of categories. For an overall user, it’s the most reliable choice though.

Top Pick – Exerpeutic Folding Magnetic Upright Bike

A smart looking bike which is also foldable, and is easy to assemble. The Exerpeutic folding upright bike is our top pick overall because it has a very user-friendly design and differences in your build/size don’t affect your ability to use the bike. It performs very well and has great potential. You can keep development going for a while thanks to different resistance levels.

Benefits

Space Saving

Folds away similarly to an ironing board. The weight on this isn’t too heavy either, so once folded you can easily move it out of the way. Once folded it could fit into a large cupboard or other storage space, so it’s a great home machine.

Best Exercise Bike Under 200

View on Amazon

Comfortable

The size when properly set up is big enough to be comfortable yet small enough to comfortably get on and off of. It handles a weight of up to 300 lbs thanks to the sturdy frame and design. The seat is nice and large as well, and there’s a good amount of cushioning. It can also be adjusted for different users, again accommodating different sized users.

User Friendly

The user-friendliness of the [easyazon_link identifier=”B007595TKU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Exerpeutic Upright Bike[/easyazon_link] doesn’t stop with the comfort. There’s a clear LCD display to show various data like distance, speed, time, and calories burned. It’s very quiet when in use as well because the mechanism is magnetic. This also makes it fast and easy to switch between resistances using the knob attachment. Pedaling motion is also nice and smooth.

Drawbacks

Not for Intense Sessions

While being a good all-around bike because of the 8 resistance levels, this doesn’t cope well with intense sessions. Upright bikes in general just aren’t designed for overly intense sessions. For those kinds of workouts, a spin bike would probably be better.

Resistance Could Wear Out Over Time

Some magnetic bike mechanisms begin to get less effective over time. This is because they use resistance pads to operate, and these are vulnerable to being worn down. Basically this means your bike might need replacing after a few years of heavy use.

Best Recumbent Bike – Marcy Recumbent Exercise Bike ME 709

A great all-around recumbent bike that comes in under the $200 mark. Marcy is a well-established fitness company and has been around for decades. The [easyazon_link identifier=”B002KV1MJU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]ME 709[/easyazon_link] is a cheap and easy to build bike with plenty of usability. The resistance can be moved between 8 different levels and the pedals are well designed. There’s a good number of nice features too, as expected from a good bike, though some people have suffered reliability issues with this particular model after heavy use. You’ll be hard pushed to find a recumbent bike of this quality for $200 or under though, so this remains our recumbent pick. For more recumbent bikes in general, click here.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B002KV1MJU” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41qvpFYuMdL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Benefits

Bargain for a Recumbent

Recumbent bikes tend to be more expensive than the standard upright version, so this is a bargain buy. More than that, many users have entirely reliable experiences with this bike and haven’t suffered any issues. It’s only some users who seem to have problems with a couple of parts breaking or stopping working. Marcy is also very good at providing support to any users who do happen to suffer problems, so I’d feel quite safe giving it a go if a recumbent is needed.

Easy to Use

First off, putting [easyazon_link identifier=”B002KV1MJU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Marcy’s ME-709 bike[/easyazon_link] together is very simple, just follow the instructions. It does recommend two people to put it together and that’s a good suggestion. A couple of steps will require the second person to make it much easier.

Following that it’s simple to make adjustments so it’s comfortable for your build. The resistance is controlled by turning a knob and uses a magnetic system. Having counter-balanced pedals is a nice feature as well because pedaling is now more comfortable. It also feels like the pedals are much more under your direct control. A nice padded seat is also provided as a standard.

Great for Getting Around Mobility/Injury Issues

Being able to do a seated workout on a recumbent bike like the [easyazon_link identifier=”B002KV1MJU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Marcy ME 709[/easyazon_link] is a great way to work around joint or mobility issues. It can also let you work around injuries or make a great rehab tool.

Drawbacks

Could be Unreliable

As I mentioned in the summary above, this bike has been known to suffer some problems with a couple of parts, such as the pedals. The workaround here is that there are many, many more happy users than those who are unhappy. Marcy also provides good customer support, so check with the vendor about support and warranty details, and you should be fine.

Best Pedal Exerciser – DeskCycle Bike Pedal Exerciser

DeskCycle has created an awesome little device that can fit under your desk at work. If you’re trying to fit in more exercise and struggling for time, their [easyazon_link identifier=”B00B1VDNQA” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Pedal Exerciser[/easyazon_link] could be the perfect solution. It’s also a wonderful tool for people trying to get a lot of training time in, for endurance events for example.

Benefits

Highly Convenient

This fits under a desk nicely and is so easy to use that many people have said they forget they’re even pedaling! Putting it together is very easy and only takes a few minutes. The reason it feels easy is a smooth, effortless motion at lower resistance levels. Move the resistance upwards and you will definitely start to notice it.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”343″ identifier=”B00B1VDNQA” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41GQ3verykL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

User Friendly

Along with well sized and smooth pedals, there is an LCD display included for things like speed, distance, and so on. The display is separate to the [easyazon_link identifier=”B00B1VDNQA” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]DeskCycle pedal exerciser[/easyazon_link] itself. That’s important because you don’t want to have to get under the desk just to check the display. Instead, you can have that on your desk and give it a glance whenever you like. It connects to the main unit with a simple wire which can easily be tucked out of the way.

Drawbacks

Depending on Your Leg & Desk Size, Space Could be Tight

This [easyazon_link identifier=”B00B1VDNQA” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]desk cycle[/easyazon_link] is made to sit around a height of 10 inches, and many people don’t have desks that have a 10-inch clearance space already. This could make it less usable for you, so be sure to double-check before you buy!

Harder Resistance Levels a Little Redundant

Once you start kicking resistance up through the levels you will definitely start to notice it. Because you’re putting more effort in, it will affect your ability to write or type normally, and will also start to affect concentration. At the highest settings, it’s near impossible to actually focus on work, so they become a little redundant as a desk exercise. They could still be useful to those who just want to sit down while using it though.

Best Spin Bike – Sunny SF-B1001

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B003ZVHK04″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Sunny SF-B1001[/easyazon_link] bike is pretty much at the $200 limit, as it sometimes drops to 200 though is usually just a little bit over. Finding a good spin bike in this price range is difficult though, and this one is worth going just slightly over the budget. Sunny is a highly reliable brand and produces many other quality bikes, as well as other cardio equipment.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B003ZVHK04″ locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51krJTgVzYL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Benefits

Reliability

This is made from high-quality steel and doesn’t shake or have any movement whilst being ridden. It’s got a solid design as well and we’ve found that most users have had no problems. The resistance works by using resistance pads which will need replacing roughly every couple of years.

Comfortable

You can get the perfect riding position for yourself thanks to adjustable handlebars AND an adjustable seat. Any good spin bike should have both of these functions. The [easyazon_link identifier=”B003ZVHK04″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Sunny spin bike[/easyazon_link] also has a water holder included and a smooth chain motion providing the resistance. These make it even more comfortable for the user, as pedaling is smooth with no jerkiness.

Lots of Workout Potential

You can push on to some really hard workouts with varying levels of resistance. You can also use the lower levels to build up still, and trying different workout styles gives even more variation. Overall there aren’t many users who would need to go beyond the capabilities of this spin bike.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B003ZVHK04″ locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51krJTgVzYL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Drawbacks

No Feedback/Monitor

One of the things to be cut from this budget-price bike is the electronic monitor. There is no screen or feedback system, so you have to rely on yourself to monitor the time and just push yourself for results. This works for many people, though for a beginner it could be very intimidating.

Limited Warranty

Let me start by saying that Sunny definitely has a reputation for making reliable products. The [easyazon_link identifier=”B003ZVHK04″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]SF-B1001[/easyazon_link] is definitely one of their products known for good performance in this category too. The actual warranty provided only covers 90 days of use though. It is definitely worth looking into an extended warranty for a little peace of mind, but as I said, it should hold up anyway.

The top-end exercise bikes cost well in excess of $500. But, this does not mean you need to spend a huge amount of funds on a bike. You can read this guide to discover what is the best exercise bike under 500 that is perfect for newbie’s and intermediate level fitness fanatics.

My personal preference is the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01KAGX74E” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Schwinn 230[/easyazon_link] because it’s a recumbent and I found it both easy to use and beneficial when suffering from a bad back. You can take a look at my review comparison with the 270 here.

An exercise bike may not seem as appealing or hard work as an elliptical trainer but they are a very efficient way of working out and improving your overall fitness and stamina. Best of all; you can use the best exercise bike under $500 from the comfort of your own home; even in front of the television if you like.

Easy Access – Recumbent Bike

Size 12.5” x 66.5” with a height of 27”

Advantages

Program Range

With access to 22 different workout programs, you should always be able to find a routine to fit your schedule.

There are 20 different resistance levels; ensuring you are challenged as much as you need to be. In addition, the ability to record and track two different user profiles will help you to beat your own records.

Quality

Schwinn is a recognized leader in the fitness industry and this machine continues to do the name proud. The 230 is well built and smooth; you should have no complaints while covered by the extensive warranty.

Display Features

You can access the LCD screen easily while working out and with a quick press of the button check your heart rate, distance, calories burned, and your speed. You’ll also benefit from a drinks holder and a cooling fan; just to ensure you have everything you could need to hand.

Comfort

[easyazon_link identifier=”B01KAGX74E” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]The Schwinn 230[/easyazon_link] is a recumbent bike, while this means it takes up a little more space in your home it is exceptionally supportive when you have lower back pain. Combine this with the walkthrough style and you can continue to exercise even when your back is bad.

This is why it is the best exercise bike under $500 on this list.

The NordicTrack GX 2.7 Sport – Best Exercise Bike Under 500 For General Comfort

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B07372RL1X” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/413fHdocp0L.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”304″]View on Amazon

20 Resistance Levels

Oversized Seat

Reputation

Upright Bike

15lb Flywheel

Advantages

Seating Style

The seat is oversized and well padded. This makes it perfect for everyone to use as you can exercise in comfort.

Although this can seem a small point it will make a big difference the length of time you spend working out and the frequency.

A nice feature is the ability to move the console to your desired position. This ensures that you can comfortably see the readout whilst your ride; preventing you from having to stop to check where you are.

This does mean that all the members of the family can use your bike.

Quality Build

[easyazon_link identifier=”B07372RL1X” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]NordicTrack[/easyazon_link] has an excellent record for providing high quality machines. They offer a comprehensive warranty although the machine is very well built; it should give you no real issues.

The flywheel is weighted which helps provide a smooth and comfortable ride and allows you to focus on the exercise not the annoying creaks and groans.

Additional Features

The bike comes with 20 different work out programs which should help you to get started and stick to your new exercise schedule.

10 of the programs are performance-based while the other 10 are calorie based. You can read all the information while you exercise from the onscreen display. It will show you distance, time calories, and your pulse as well as the resistance setting.

You can even connect to iFit Live to increase the number of workout programs available.

Disadvantages

Additional Workouts Come At A Price

While [easyazon_link identifier=”B014LEWU3K” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]iFit Live[/easyazon_link] is a great feature it does come at a price. Before you can actually use these programs on your bike you’ll need to purchase the iFit module. This will cost you an additional $100.

It’s not essential to using the bike but as a nice additional feature, it’s a little on the expensive side.

Number Of Resistance Levels

There are 20 different resistance levels which sounds pretty good. Unfortunately, they don’t cover as big a range as most people will want.

At first, this will be perfectly adequate. But, as your fitness improves you may find yourself looking for a bigger challenge. Unfortunately, it can be adjusted or added to; leaving you with a machine that doesn’t quite fulfill your needs.

The Ultrasport F-Bike – Best Exercise Bike Under 500 On A Budget

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B00VBL4D8M” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41U6z2OMOUL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Folding Storage

8 Resistance levels

5-pound flywheel

Measures 2 x 17 x 44 inches

Heart Rate Monitor

Advantages

Excellent Price

This is the budget offering on the list. It is possible to pick it up for under $300. However, this does not make it a poor choice. The price reflects a reduction in features which makes this a great choice for anyone starting their fitness journey.

The F-Bike is still well built and durable; it should provide you with years of service.

Ease of Use

This bike can only handle weights of up to 100kg. This is partly due to its size and also thanks to the fact that it folds away. While this makes it great for storage it does reduce some of the strength in the machine; hence the weight limit.

With simplicity, you’ll get a bike that is very easy to jump on and start pedaling. The 8 levels of resistance can be set in seconds and the bike is quiet enough to be used without disturbing someone in the next room.

Of course, the fact that it can be easily folded away does make this an excellent option not just for people on a budget, but also for anyone with limited space.

Features

This is not a top-end bike; it doesn’t have the features that go with the top end. But, it can record your heart rate, calories burned, time riding, distance, and speed. This can all be recorded to allow you to compare your progress on a day to day basis.

It is important to note that the screen is battery powered not mains powered.

Disadvantages

Resistance Range

The Ultrasport F-Bike is clearly aimed at people just starting their fitness routine. While this makes the resistance levels understandable it is highly likely that you will find yourself feeling limited in a very short space of time.

The lack of challenge could force you to replace the bike with [easyazon_link identifier=”B01KAGX74E” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]the 230[/easyazon_link]; the best exercise bike under $500 on this list; or simply give up.

Seat Height

A side effect of the folding mechanism is that the lowest seat height may not be comfortable or even reachable for anyone 5ft 5 inches or less.

This won’t be an issue if you’re taller than that but it is important to note!

40-pound flywheel with chain drive

Dimensions 43 x 50 x 20 inches

Full adjustability

6 Monitor functions

Movable

Advantages

Direct Chain Drive

The direct chain drive helps to give you the feeling that you are actually riding a bike. The resistance is created by a pad against the wheel. This means you have an excellent level of control and again; it feels very realistic.

The bike is designed to accommodate people up to 20.5 stone and remain solidly in position. IT is certainly well built.

It is worth noting that you can also pedal this bike backward; engaging the back leg muscles which don’t normally need to do much when cycling.

Movable

As a fairly large and heavy piece of equipment, you’d be forgiven for thinking once it is positioned that’s it.

Fortunately, this is not the case; it has small wheels which will enable you to easily move the bike around your room or even house. These lock into place to stop the bike moving when you are using it.

Functions

There are 6 main functions of the easily read monitor. These tell you your speed, calories, time, distance, overall mileage, and your heart rate; via the monitors built into the grips.

This is all fairly standard on any exercise machine but worth noting. After all, you’d be disappointed if they weren’t offered.

Adjustable

The seat can be adjusted into any one of 10 different positions. In addition, it can be moved back and forth as can the handlebars. Almost everyone should be able to find a position that is comfortable when using this spin bike.

It is worth noting that the riding position is intended to be more like a Tour de France racer than a classic exercise bike.

Disadvantages

Comfort

Although this bike is very adjustable there have been a number of complaints regarding the comfort of the saddle. Most people simply say it is painful.

This is a shame in what is otherwise an excellent spinning bike.

Spin Bike

It is designed as a spin bike, this means that if you want to adopt a more comfortable stance but still have the feel of being on a real bike, you can’t.

The bike is not adjustable enough to give you an upright cycling position which is a shame as it has the potential to be the best exercise bike under $500.

Summing It Up

There is little doubt in my mind that every one of these bikes can be called the best exercise bike under 500 in their class. The question is whether you have a bad back and need to purchase the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01KAGX74E” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Schwinn 230,[/easyazon_link] are interested in road cycling and want a JLL IC300, looking for a general fitness bike in the [easyazon_link identifier=”B07372RL1X” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]NordicTrack GX 2.7[/easyazon_link] or are simply starting out and want to build a habit with the Ultrasport F-Bike.

I choose the 230 every time as it gives the best support and enough features to make every workout worthwhile.

Are you interested to learn more about Precor spin bike reviews?

After using many spin bikes, myself and carrying out extensive research, I recommend the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01DSSKNVQ” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Precor Shift[/easyazon_link] for most people.

The other popular option available is the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01DSSKLAY” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Precor ride[/easyazon_link], which does provide many of the same benefits and features. However, there are a few key things that make it a secondary option compared to the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01DSSKNVQ” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Shift model[/easyazon_link].

If you want to find out about what these Precor bikes have to offer you, take a look at our review below.

I’ve covered all of the features, including the pros and cons, to ensure you’re given the full picture. By the end, you’ll have a much easier time picking between these two spin bikes.

Precor Spin Bike Reviews: Top Pick – Precor Shift

The Good

Construction

Precor has incorporated steel tubing materials to construct the frame of their [easyazon_link identifier=”B01DSSKNVQ” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Shift spin bike[/easyazon_link]. The construction has been purposefully made specifically for resisting sweat and increasing strength.

I liked how the pedals have been made with a double-sided design. This means you don’t waste time trying to fit your feet into the pedals in a certain way. They are also very durable, so you can be sure they’ll last you a long time.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B01DSSKNVQ” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51yKzfZot2L.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

The overall construction of this bike is impressively stable. One of the main reasons for this is due to the structural resin that’s been coated in a rubber mold to increase how well the bike can grip onto the floor.

So, while you’re riding, you will never have to worry about how the stable the bike will be. This allows for more intense bursts of exercise in a safer manner.

The construction is also able to withstand a maximum weight capacity of 350 lbs.

Comfort

As far as comfort is concerned, I was impressed by what this spin bike has to offer.

Precor has implemented a unique Q factor design. This simply refers to the distance between each of the pedals. The Q factor ensures that the positioning of these pedals feels incredibly comfortable.

It creates an ergonomic feel that allows you to ride in comfort every time.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B01DSSKNVQ” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41-RZ4LzvgL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Adjustable Features

A major feature among spin bikes that people are concerned with is how adjustable they can be. This ties in heavily to the comfort features.

You’ll be glad to hear that there are many fantastic adjustable features available with the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01DSSKNVQ” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Precor Shift spin bike[/easyazon_link].

You can easily adjust how close or far you are from the handlebars by using the saddle slider. Changing the height at which you want to ride is also easy due to the seat post adjusting settings.

In addition to the saddle slider, you can also utilize a handlebar slider that comes with micro-adjustment features. This allows you to have complete control over the positioning of the handlebar.

Holders

Many spin bikes seem to lack in the area of accessory holders. Personally, I find that I prefer to exercise with pieces of equipment that let me easily store things like my keys and phone.

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B01DSSKNVQ” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Shift spin bike[/easyazon_link] comes with a built-in tray that lets you store various items.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B01DSSKNVQ” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51rAGctlSFL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Moreover, they have also integrated a dual water bottle holder too. This is another very important feature that I always look out for when buying exercise equipment. Staying hydrated while exercising is crucial – both for your performance and health.

The Not So Good

Heavier Weight

There are edge-mounted wheels built-in to this bike, which make the job of transportation easier. However, this bike weighs 140 lbs, which is pretty heavy.

Therefore, many people would struggle to manoeuvre it, despite the wheels.

2nd Choice: Precor Ride

So, you may now be interested to learn more about how the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01DSSKLAY” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Precor Ride[/easyazon_link] compares to the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01DSSKNVQ” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Precor Shift[/easyazon_link]. They are very similar in a lot of areas, however, there is one downside to this spin bike that puts it below the Shift.

The Good

Construction

Precor has implemented steel materials to make the tubing for the frame on this model. I found that this provides the bike with a fantastic sense of durability and stability.

Similarly, to the Shift, the model of the Ride provides that you with sweat resistance and strength benefits.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”365″ identifier=”B01DSSKLAY” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41dUtH1XYqL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Comfort

Precor has also incorporated their unique Q factor design feature with this [easyazon_link identifier=”B01DSSKLAY” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Ride spin bike[/easyazon_link]. As a result, there is a good distance between the pedals that allow you to ride for as long as you want in complete comfort.

I liked how the grip used on the handlebars feel very comfortable to hold too.

Adjustable Features

You are able to adjust the saddle backward and forwards by using the slider feature. As a result, you have the option to pick the exact distance that you want to be from the handlebars.

You can also benefit from this slider feature when it comes to adjusting the handlebar too. However, they take the precision a step further here by allowing you even more adjustment options until you find the position that feels best for you.

In addition to the saddle and handlebars, you also have the ability to alter the height of your seat post too.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”365″ identifier=”B01DSSKLAY” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51P%2BvJ-6KbL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]

Holders

As I mentioned before, exercise equipment that comes with holders is a big benefit for me. That’s why I was glad to see that Precor has kept that standard the same for this [easyazon_link identifier=”B01DSSKLAY” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Ride model[/easyazon_link].

There is a designated tray for you to securely hold your phone while you workout. They have also implemented a water bottle holder that is within close reach. Therefore, you can easily grab a sip of water at any time during your workouts to remain hydrated.

Transportation

The transportation features of this bike are also similar to the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01DSSKNVQ” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Precor Shift spin bike[/easyazon_link]. It comes with wheels that have been edge-mounted to make maneuvering it easy.

However, the one noticeable area where the Ride outdoes the Shift is the ease that you can move it around. This is because it weighs 124 lbs, which is considerably lighter and takes less effort to move around than [easyazon_link identifier=”B01DSSKNVQ” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]the Shift[/easyazon_link].

The Not So Good

Noise

There is one major downside that comes with the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01DSSKLAY” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Precor Ride spin bike[/easyazon_link].

Customers have noticed that when they’re riding it, the chain produces a lot more noise than expected. Therefore, if you’re exercising from home and there are people around, it’s likely the noise will disturb them.

Not to mention, it can be very annoying to have to put up with.

For me, the noise factor was a major let down. However, for others, the noise level may not be something that they’re so concerned about – it comes down to personal preference.

Which One Should You Pick?

Right off the bat, the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01DSSKNVQ” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Precor Shift[/easyazon_link] is more expensive compared to the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01DSSKLAY” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Ride model[/easyazon_link].

You may have noticed that a lot of the features they possess are very similar. However, there are a few key areas that make the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01DSSKNVQ” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Precor Shift[/easyazon_link] a better choice.

For one, it has been made with a heavier frame. While this does mean that moving it around is harder, it doesn’t make it impossible. There are still wheels available to roll it around.

The heavier frame design works to increase the overall durability of the bike. It also provides you with more stability while riding it. This is an especially great benefit for people who like partaking in high intensity interval training.

You’re able to go all out for the intense intervals without having to worry about whether the bike will tip over.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”365″ identifier=”B01DSSKLAY” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51DvBe7xB7L.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

The other major benefit to the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01DSSKNVQ” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Precor Shift[/easyazon_link] is how quietly it operates. Unfortunately, the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01DSSKLAY” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Ride spin bike[/easyazon_link] has a chain that produces a lot of noise.

So, if you need something that’s sturdier, more durable, and quieter to use, I highly recommend the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01DSSKNVQ” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Precor Shift[/easyazon_link].

Final Thoughts

The quiet operation of the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01DSSKNVQ” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Shift model[/easyazon_link] and stronger construction were the deciding factors that made it our top pick.

With the noisy chain on the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01DSSKLAY” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Ride spinner[/easyazon_link], you can end up disturbing people around you. Moreover, if you wanted to set the bike up in front of the TV, you would struggle to hear it.

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B01DSSKNVQ” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Shift spin bike[/easyazon_link] allows you to cycle in a quieter environment that allows you to watch TV and cause less disturbance.

Having said that, if you find the downsides of the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01DSSKLAY” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Precor Ride[/easyazon_link] easier to overlook, then I’d advise you to choose that one instead. The price is considerably cheaper and many of the benefits and features are the same.

So, for people on a budget, the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01DSSKLAY” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Precor Ride[/easyazon_link] is still a fantastic option. It also weighs 124 lbs, which is less than the Shift, making it a little easier to transport if needed.

But for those of you who are similar to me, the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01DSSKNVQ” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Precor Shift[/easyazon_link] is the number one choice. A stronger frame and quiet operation are key factors in my decision-making process when it comes to fitness equipment that I’m going to be using from home.

Be sure to use these Precor spin bike reviews to help you decide which one is right for you.

Exercise bikes are extremely popular these days. They give you a wonderful way to workout and burn calories while keeping the impact on your legs and joints very low. There are a variety of different bike types available though, so which is best for you? Well, today we’re looking at upright exercise bike vs spin bike. My personal choice is a good spin bike, like the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01B3GL20Q” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Keiser M3i[/easyazon_link]. This is because I’m an athlete and need hard conditioning workouts, which the spin bike provides.

Many upright bikes just won’t be able to give an intense enough work out for me. Spin bikes are usually more stable and designed for harder workouts. With that said, if you aren’t at a high level of fitness, an upright bike could be the choice for you.

You may also be wondering whether a bike is even for you. If so you can take a look at our breakdown of using a treadmill vs a bike and take your decision from there. It depends on a lot more than just your level of fitness, so take a look through our article and see what recommendation works best for you!

Upright Exercise Bike vs Spin Bike

Spin Bikes

The spin bike, also known as an indoor cycle, has only been available in the mainstream since the 1980s and ’90s. They are designed to mimic a real road bike, so they have the exact same type of build and appearance, including normal handlebars and a bicycle seat. A hunched over riding position is the way all of these bikes are used, though you can also stand upon them.

Resistance is provided from a flywheel which actually attaches to the pedals, so they don’t stop moving just because you do. An average spin bike costs more than any other type of exercise bike and is designed for realism. They were originally created for professional cyclists who can’t train outdoors, so the workout potential with them is huge!

Along with feeling very real, in every area including gear changing/resistance, these bikes don’t tend to have many extras. A console/screen is rare, unless you get something like the [easyazon_link identifier=”B076TZZRC6″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Efitment Indoor Cycle[/easyazon_link], with some bikes utilizing video apps to give a workout instead. With the potential of spin workouts and spin classes, these are becoming a lot more popular commercially.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B076TZZRC6″ locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/415wZko6f8L.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Benefits

Capable of Giving More Intense Workouts

A spin bike uses a heavy flywheel to provide resistance. This creates a similar resistance to a road bike, where the flywheel is attached to the pedals so the pedals keep moving as long as the wheel does. Because of this, you use a lot more energy to control those pedals. With the use of a standing position as well, even more, muscles are activated and more energy is used. This means the spin bike is capable of more extreme workouts than any other indoor exercise bike.

More Applicable for Outdoor Cycling Thanks to Similar Position & Realistic Design

A similar position and flywheel set-up also help with realistic training for outdoor cycling. You use the same muscles in the same positions, and with a good video or app, you can even simulate almost any outdoor ride you can think of. Using the resistance in place of gears to simulate different inclines really helps with this feature. The bike itself also looks exactly like a road bike, with the handlebars in the same place and the resistance knob usually located where the gear selectors would be.

Can be Used in Standing Positions

The standing position is also used on spin bikes, which activates more muscles and allows a much tougher workout. Being able to stand on the bike and exert a lot of force through the pedals means you can push through higher resistance than what’s possible from a sitting position. Having different positions also gives the possibility of using specialized workouts to target weak points or specific muscle groups.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B00467H5YW” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/414P7b4lFFL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Can be More Reliable & Sturdier Than Other Types of Bike

Indoor cycles are built to be sturdy and reliable. Simulating a real bike means there can’t be any wobble or instability when the user is leaning in any direction or pedaling really hard. A good spin bike won’t budge at all in either situation. That also helps it to be more realistic because you can really hammer your workout without any risk of falling over or off. The overall reliability of the machine is improved by these features too. Having to survive hard use means spin bikes are built to last many bumps and bangs, and will also hold up fine if misused a little. The [easyazon_link identifier=”B00467H5YW” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Sunny SF-B1002[/easyazon_link] is an example of a sturdy bike, reliable and capable of intense usage.

Often Support Heavier Users

The sturdiness also lets heavier users take advantage of this equipment. Users who are too heavy for upright bikes are likely to find spin bikes that can and will support them.

Drawbacks

Takes Up More Room

If you’re a home user, a spin bike could be a pain because it doesn’t fold up and isn’t easy to move out of the way. Some have a couple of wheels so they can be tilted and wheeled around quite comfortably, like the [easyazon_link identifier=”B06XZKBFQM” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Body Xtreme Fitness Exercise Bike[/easyazon_link]. However, because of the size, you’re unlikely to fit one into a cupboard or small shed. Instead, a spin bike is designed more to be kept in place as a permanent feature.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B06XZKBFQM” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51SyQAQXqEL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”427″]View on Amazon

Tough For Beginners

Less experienced users could struggle a little with a spin bike. There are low resistance settings to use but without programs and readouts on most versions, it’s hard to know what kind of work out you’re actually getting as a beginner. This leads to boredom and disinterest for some users. Other users try to join in using vids or spin classes, which are too difficult for their level of fitness. It is possible to start out with one of these bikes, it just takes a bit of time and patience before you can participate on classes.

No Pre-Programmed Workouts

The lack of pre-programmed workouts is a real problem for novice users who don’t know how to create their own workout. If you’re unsure of what workout to do, a spin bike is probably not for you. They’re a lot more useful for cyclists and people who know how to craft their own workouts so they can hit their own goals.

Upright Exercise Bikes

An upright exercise bike is generally the most popular and frequently seen type of exercise bike. They have been around in gyms and homes for decades and are super easy to get started with. They are designed to let you sit completely upright, not hunched over as you would be on a real bike. This is more comfortable for a lot of people because there’s less strain on the spine.

Handlebars are also higher up to accommodate this seating position. They’re conveniently placed right in front of you when in the upright position. Pedals are powered completely by your legs and will stop moving as soon as you do. Take a look at the [easyazon_link identifier=”B002KV383S” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Marcy Upright Exercise Bike[/easyazon_link] to get a good idea of the design.

Training with this type of bike is great for people who prefer an upright position on the seat. It’s also good for general cardio and calorie burn, though it doesn’t do a great job of replicating race cycling because of the body position. The upright position is instead more similar to a casual outdoor ride, and sometimes even varies from that slightly. These are also a popular in-home choice because they can often be folded away easily to save space.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B002KV383S” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41ZCrVY-hfL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”284″]View on Amazon

Benefits

Cheap to Buy

The upright bike is generally the cheapest type of exercise bike available. There are expensive versions too, but comparing a budget upright bike to other types, the upright is almost always going to be cheaper. If you’re interested in cheaper bikes, check out our articles of the best options under $200 and under $500.

Great For Beginners & Easy to Use

An upright bike is intuitive and most people have seen or even used one at some time in their lives. Hop on and start pedalling, it’s that simple. Having such an easy set up makes it user-friendly, and the lower levels of an upright bike are perfect for beginners because they aren’t too difficult to work with and

Good for Development of the Core and Back Area

Sitting upright means aligning your spine and activating the various stabilizing muscles in your core and back. This can help to give a good overall workout and increase the number of calories burned.

Doesn’t Take Up Much Space

Many upright bikes can be folded up easily. They are also quite lightweight. These two factors make it easy to keep out of sight in small storage space, or even just tuck into the corner of a room. The [easyazon_link identifier=”B007595TKU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Exerpeutic Folding Magnetic Upright Bike[/easyazon_link] is a great example of this. Even the non-folding versions are often small and light enough to keep hidden!

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B007595TKU” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41copX1fBwL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Usually More Comfortable

An upright is designed to give a good workout combined with being user-friendly. That means it doesn’t try to purely simulate road biking. One advantage of this is that uprights can use a bigger, more padded seat. They also have the handlebars and pedals in better locations. You get a lot more comfort from these features!

Often Comes With a Console & Pre-Programmed Workouts

The majority of uprights come with a console fitted. This console tracks data such as time, distance, and calories burned. A standard upright console is usually more informative than the ones on spin bikes.

Some uprights also offer pre-programmed workouts. Some offer a smaller variety with general goals, whilst others have a huge selection available. This can be very appealing for home users who want to keep it interesting and vary their sessions. For example, the [easyazon_link identifier=”B00KVZM2SC” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Nautilus Upright Bike[/easyazon_link] comes with 22 programs, and 20 levels of resistance!

Drawbacks

Can Cause Back/Neck Aches

Some people don’t like the upright position, especially those with lower back problems. Sitting upright for long time periods can also cause extra aches in the back, neck, or forearm areas. The best way to get around this is actually to try the bike before you buy, so you’re sure it aligns well for your build.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B00KVZM2SC” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41Uky4yeD9L.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Not Great For Intense Workouts

Uprights tend to be lighter and not anchored as well as a recumbent or spin bike. The way force is exerted on an upright also leads it to be unstable. It’s quite a tall machine compared to other bikes yet can easily sway side to side under heavy force or fast pedaling.

There’s no option for standing or hunched pedaling either because of how it’s designed. This limits how much force you can comfortably exert over an extended time anyway. The bike is unstable and not suited for heavy workouts for the reasons given. For advanced users, a spin bike is definitely the better choice.

Bottom Line – Upright Exercise Bike vs Spin Bike

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B007595TKU” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41copX1fBwL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]View on Amazon

Basically it all comes down to your individual needs. Are you looking for something small and easy to move, most likely for home use? Or do you prefer guided workouts and simplicity? Perhaps you’re just looking for a decent workout without paying too much, or don’t need cycling realism or heavy workouts? If you’re answering mostly yes to these, you would be best suited with an upright bike, like the [easyazon_link identifier=”B007595TKU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Exerpeutic Magnetic Upright Bike[/easyazon_link].

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”322″ identifier=”B00LSX8AA0″ locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41kaZ3ulbHL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]

Perhaps that isn’t the case though. Maybe you want tough, advanced, or realistic workouts. Perhaps your aim is to get into competitive sports cycling, or you’re a high-level athlete who needs heavy and intense usability? In that case, the spin bike is definitely the best way to go, and my recommendation would be the [easyazon_link identifier=”B00LSX8AA0″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Keiser M3i cycle[/easyazon_link].

Best Exercise Bike Under $200

Perhaps you’re looking for a budget exercise bike, maybe as a first venture into the world of home fitness and bikes. We know that there are those who like a specific type of bike more than others, so there are picks for each type (recumbent, upright, spin) in this post. [easyazon_link identifier=”B007595TKU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Exerpeutic’s Folding Magnetic Upright Bike [/easyazon_link]was the top pick overall.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B007595TKU” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/410kPaOTbaL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]

Best Exercise Bike Under $500

Again we take a look at a few different types of bikes in this article, this time focused on mid-range bikes. Top-end home bikes can go well into four figures so this price range is modest though it’s probably above what a beginner would need.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B01KAGX74E” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/5169ALld3oL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]

Top prize went to the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01KAGX74E” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Schwinn 230 Recumbent Bike[/easyazon_link] is a comfortable bike to use and is also great for injury rehab and for anyone with back or leg issues. Being a recumbent bike gives it an extra comfortable seat and a normal, well supported seated position. Your legs still get a great workout though, and this model has an informative and easy to use LCD screen and panel.

Upright Exercise Bike vs Spin Bike

One of the big questions around exercise bikes is “what’s the difference between uprights and spin bikes?” Well, you can obviously see the difference, but what I mean is, what are the pro’s and con’s of each type, and how do their effects differ?

We break a few down for you too, such as the [easyazon_link identifier=”B00LSX8AA0″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Keiser M3i[/easyazon_link], talking about the specific benefits and drawbacks to the specific models which are mentioned. By the end of the article, you’ll know exactly how a spin bike differs from something like the [easyazon_link identifier=”B002KV383S” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Marcy Upright[/easyazon_link]. You’ll know which is best for you and also what uses each one is better.

Exercise Bike vs Treadmill

This look at bikes against treadmills is handy if you’re unsure about which piece of equipment to use. There are a few specifics mentioned on models like the[easyazon_link identifier=”B0053Y0TAE” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Cybex 750T [/easyazon_link] and others, both treadmills and bikes.

You can find out exactly what drawbacks both the treadmill and bike have, and the benefits of both as well.

Spin Bike vs Recumbent Bike

While uprights can look a little like both recumbents and spin bikes, recumbents and spin bikes definitely look very different to each other. One has you in a traditional cycling position and looks like a bike, whilst the other reminds me more of a pedalo – you’re in a normal seat with your legs out in front of you to pedal.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B00467H5YW” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41Sky%2B6g7HL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Spin bikes, such as the [easyazon_link identifier=”B0090VYHMC” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Sunny Indoor Cycle[/easyazon_link], are preferred by more serious riders, especially those who are preparing for races or endurance events on an actual road bike. The recumbent is usually preferred by people who just want a good, comfortable workout. Something like the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01KAGX74E” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Schwinn 230 Recumbent Bike[/easyazon_link] is much more comfortable than a spin bike and has a lot of uses for frailer users or those with injuries. Recumbents are also great for all types of back and joint problems.

Spin Bike vs Treadmill

Spin bikes are created to be as close to an actual road bike as possible. Realism is the aim and a good spin bike, such as the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01KXN6PU2″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Merax Indoor Bike[/easyazon_link], will give a great workout and can work all attributes needed for riding a road bike.

With that said, spin bikes aren’t for everyone. If you’re using them as a supplement to other training goals, they might not be the best item for you. Take cardio for example, some people will see better improvements from using something like a treadmill instead of a spin bike. The [easyazon_link identifier=”B077J3F1DK” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Nautilus T618[/easyazon_link] is a great tool for general cardio and can be used for both aerobic and anaerobic workouts.

Having knee problems is not a rare problem. Over the years wear and tear begins to take its’ toll. Injuries can speed this process up as well, or leave a joint permanently weakened. Whether it’s ligament issues, arthritis, or something else, having knee issues can be limiting to your exercise. A good idea for those who suffer from bad knees is to use low-impact exercise such as cycling. Our recommendation for the best exercise bike for knee problems is the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01MS7EWR9″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike[/easyazon_link].

Using a bike also allows you to strengthen the tendons, ligaments, and especially the surrounding muscular structure. The impact is minimal while the knee and legs, in general, are worked and strengthened. This can actually improve some conditions such as arthritis or can be used as a part of injury rehabilitation.

Keep in mind there are different styles of exercise bikes and the different positions can affect the strain placed on your knees. Our recommendations are mostly recumbent bikes, as recumbent bikes place the least strain on your knees. Other types of bike are still useful for those with less delicate knees, or who are in the advanced stages of injury recovery, so we have included an upright and a spin bike recommendation as well. You can find out more about the differences between bike types by reading our articles on Upright Bikes vs Spin Bikes and Spin Bikes vs Exercise Bikes.

There aren’t any real drawbacks to this recommendation other than the price. It’s more expensive than our other options though you get what you pay for in this case.

Best Space Saving Option – Exerpeutic 400XL Folding Recumbent Bike

Our folding bike choice is the [easyazon_link identifier=”B004O6TXVS” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] Exerpeutic 400XL folding recumbent bike[/easyazon_link]. This isn’t an entirely recumbent bike, and should probably be described as semi-recumbent. The position is still more comfortable for many people than an upright though, and it folds away with ease. To find out more on some alternative recumbent bikes, check out our post on the best recumbent bikes.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B004O6TXVS” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41HRWRAnPuL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”330″]
View on Amazon

Benefits

Doesn’t Take Up Much Space

This bike isn’t as big as most recumbent bikes when setting up. It measures 33”x19”x46” when assembled and can be folded away easily. It also only weighs around 40 lbs so shouldn’t be too difficult to move when folded.

Quiet & Smooth

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B004O6TXVS” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] 400XL[/easyazon_link] doesn’t make much noise when in use. It also doesn’t jam or wobble at all, staying steady and smooth in its’ operation.

Cheap

[easyazon_link identifier=”B004O6TXVS” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Exerpeutics 400XL folding bike[/easyazon_link] is cheaper than most recumbent options, making it a popular choice.

Drawbacks

Durability

Although this bike comes with a 1-year warranty, there have been reports of this bike beginning to wear out a little over time. That could mean it needs replacing after a few years depending on how much you use it. The price isn’t over the top, so this is acceptable to some. Also, keep in mind that many users haven’t had any durability issues.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B004O6TXVS” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41pP5KHMQzL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

No User Profiles

There’s no ability to enter personal info into the [easyazon_link identifier=”B004O6TXVS” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]400XL bike[/easyazon_link] so it can’t figure out statistics for you, and also won’t remember any settings.

Lack of Adjustability

Now, this is a tricky area. The bike is actually quite adjustable and can be comfortably used by most people. The stated heights are 5’2” – 6’2”. We have found shorter users may be able to get by, perhaps to around 5’ in height, whilst taller users are likely to struggle. Even at 6’2” you’re probably going to max out some of the adjustments, so the ideal sizes are more like 5’2” – 6’.

Best Upright Option – Exerpeutic Folding Magnetic Upright Bike

Exerpeutic get another bike into our picks for this article with the [easyazon_link identifier=”B007595TKU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] Exerpeutic Folding Magnetic Upright Bike[/easyazon_link]. As the name suggests, this is another folding bike and is our choice out of the uprights. It’s also a magnetic bike which means it uses a magnetic flywheel to create resistance. This is a smooth and reliable method that tends to work well though the flywheel may need replacing after a few years of heavy use if you want the resistance to stay the same.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B007595TKU” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41copX1fBwL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Benefits

Compact

As the name suggests, this is another folding bike from Exerpeutic. It folds away quickly and easily for storage, ideal for those in cramped spaces.

Smooth Operation

The magnetic flywheel and a smooth pedal motion make the [easyazon_link identifier=”B007595TKU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] Exerpeutic Folding Upright bike[/easyazon_link] very stable and smooth to ride. This model also doesn’t wobble or cause any crazy vibrations through the floor, making it a great choice for apartment dwellers.

Easy to Assemble

There aren’t many steps involved when building this [easyazon_link identifier=”B007595TKU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] Exerpeutic Magnetic bike[/easyazon_link]. It can be constructed in 15-20 minutes quite easily and the required tools are included.

Drawbacks

Reliability

As with the Exerpeutic recumbent bike, this one has had problems with wear when putting through intense use. It appears to be designed for light to moderate use and not heavy/intense sessions. Again there’s a 1-year warranty included though after this time you’ll need to fix/replace it yourself if anything happens.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B007595TKU” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/410kPaOTbaL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Comfort

Uprights, in general, are less comfortable than recumbent bikes, because the seat has no back support and is smaller. With the [easyazon_link identifier=”B007595TKU” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] Exerpeutic folding upright bike[/easyazon_link] the seat is a controversial area, with some claiming it’s comfortable while others don’t like it and want a larger, more padded seat. This should be kept in mind when ordering.

Best Spin Bike Option – Sunny Indoor Cycling Bike (SF-B1203)

Sunny is a mid-market brand that combines good quality with affordable pricing. Spin bikes are preferred for their realism related to outdoor cycling and aren’t often recommended for bad knees. If you are just completing rehab or have other reasons to use one though, the [easyazon_link identifier=”B0090VYHMC” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] Sunny Indoor Cycling Bike[/easyazon_link] is our pick for you. If you want to check out some alternative spin bikes, specifically Precor bikes, click on this link.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B0090VYHMC” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41Td1%2BUHbUL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Benefits

Cheap

When it comes to spin bikes, this is a very affordable option. Sunny’s [easyazon_link identifier=”B0090VYHMC” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] SF-B1203 indoor cycle[/easyazon_link] comes in cheaper than most spin bikes and can compete with most options in the mid-range.

Comfort

The alignment is a little different on this bike when compared to other spin bikes. It gives a bit more comfort for the user and allows the knees a bit of a better position than some other bikes.

Drawbacks

Size Restrictions

A lot of users say that being even 6’ is too tall to use this unit. The [easyazon_link identifier=”B0090VYHMC” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] Sunny SF-B1203 indoor cycle[/easyazon_link] is only adjustable at the seat, which can be moved forwards/back or up/down. With this being the only adjustable part, some people are going to struggle to find a comfortable position.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B0090VYHMC” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/4128mopM4aL.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Reliability

The trade-off for a cheap and functional spin bike like this comes in build quality. The materials used to build this bike aren’t the best and there are reports of bent or broken parts. The [easyazon_link identifier=”B0090VYHMC” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] Sunny SF-B1203[/easyazon_link] sometimes has issues with creaking/clicking noises as well.

Best Budget Option – Exerpeutic 900XL Extended Capacity Recumbent Bike

For those who want a fully recumbent bike at a bargain price, we present the [easyazon_link identifier=”B005OU4E1M” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] Exerpeutic 900XL Extended Capacity Recumbent Bike[/easyazon_link]. Yes, Exerpeutic again. This bike is user-friendly, cheap, and great for users with knee problems. View on Amazon

Benefits

Comfortable & User Friendly

Once assembled, this bike has an open layout which makes it easy to climb on and off. Comfort levels are high thanks to a large, padded seat with back support.

Cheap

There are very few recumbent bikes in this price range, so you’ll really struggle to beat the [easyazon_link identifier=”B005OU4E1M” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] Exerpeutic 900XL[/easyazon_link] without going a fair bit higher in price.

Reliable

Exerpeutic have opted for reliability with their updated version of the [easyazon_link identifier=”B005OU4E1M” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] 900XL recumbent bike[/easyazon_link]. It comes with a 3 year frame warranty and doesn’t seem to have any problems with squeaking, clicking or broken/damaged parts.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B005OU4E1M” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41%2BemPwIB5L.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Drawbacks

Limited Resistance Range

There are only 8 resistance levels to work through, making this quite limited for those who want a big range of progress. Combined with the fact there are no pre-programmed workouts, it makes this bike a bit limited for variety and better suited to dedicated users.

Poor Instructions

Many users report the instructions included with this model are tough to follow. Exerpeutic need to fix this if they want the [easyazon_link identifier=”B005OU4E1M” locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″] 900XL[/easyazon_link] to see increased popularity.

Lack of Features

Other than a basic display, there aren’t any real advanced features on this bike.

[easyazon_image align=”none” height=”500″ identifier=”B005OU4E1M” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51tn22zADML.jpg” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″ width=”500″]
View on Amazon

Bottom Line

Clearly there’s a wide range of bikes here, depending on your needs. I wholeheartedly recommend the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01MS7EWR9″ locale=”US” tag=”upbeat-jan-20″]Schwinn 270[/easyazon_link] over the alternatives unless you specifically want a folding/upright/spin/budget bike.
